Ideally with a front brake. :)

Bikes with one gear may or may not be in Fixed Gear mode. See:

But to answer your question, in fixed gear mode, the bike stops either when the rider uses a caliper brake with enough pressure to stop the bike, or the rider applies breaking pressure by slowing down the pedaling action. Or a combination thereof.

An alternative method of stopping is to crash into an object which is either stationary, or moving at a slower speed than or contrary direction to the bike's direction of travel.

A third method involves the laws of inertia or momentum, but even I'm not going to sink to that level of pedantry. (at least not yet)
To use a sailing metaphor, a…tag:thechainlink.org,2017-06-08:2211490:Comment:10593432017-06-08T14:19:16.100ZAnne Althttps://thechainlink.org/profile/Anne91

To use a sailing metaphor, a difference in the amount of sail area greatly affects how much wind one catches. That's part of the picture. Gearing and bike weight also make a difference.

I'm curious about those bikes with one gear, how do they stop? it looks like they're always pedaling.

I see them sometimes walking and the pedals it looks like an invisible person is riding it.

Awesome of you to ask straight forward questions tbh. And you are not the only ChiCycler who stops at stops signs. I commute everyday and I also do. I've also been cycling for over 15 years and I agree with your kit assessment. You are doing good brother, and you are not ignorant. Carry on :)

Oh, believe me - I totally understand (and believe me even louder -- you do not want to see me in those lycra thingies...I'd nauseate everybody outside!) the usefulness of those things...I'm just addressing those who see 'em as being granted "me over everybody else" privileges. :)
