Is West Humboldt Park an "up and coming" neighborhood? I've heard some bad info about that area.

of course it is 'up and coming' it's the new logan square / wicker park / bucktown etc.

almost all the trendy neighborhoods (lincoln park was awful 50 years ago) started out gritty and cheap and crime ridden. get in on the ground floor !!!

I could be interested. What floor is it on and how much? 

and FYI, West Humboldt Park is a great neighborhood. When's the last time you rode through there? I know of two incidences where people were shot in the Damen/North/Milwaukee area in the past 8 weeks. You wanna talk about crime? Wicker Park isn't as safe a place as people think it is. 

Let's be realistic, West Humboldt is not a great neighborhood. Things like an art or music scene, cleanliness, restaurants, and good schools make a neighborhood great. West Humboldt has none of that.

It is getting better though!

I don't want to derail this thread too much but measuring social change in a neighborhood isn't that difficult. Rents are rising, crime is falling and increasing numbers of new businesses are moving into West Humboldt Park in the past two years.

I know nothing about art in general. Music, yes, and not just RiotFest; there's loads of live music played nightly (what kind of music do you require?). Cleanliness is a quality that few of the "great" neighborhoods could realistically be judged by. Restaurants, there are many and new ones all the time, see the Reader's list. And, in Chicago, judging any neighborhood by its schools is a joke unless we're talking about the Gold Coast or Lincoln Park, and I'd argue we're not talking about great neighborhoods when we talk schools: we're talking about rich neighborhoods.

I live on the edge of Humboldt/Ukrainian Village and can tell you first hand what I see with my own eyes.

Which is to say, you don't live in West Humboldt Park. (I'm sure you know that and are referring to your observations when you leave your own neighborhood. Just clarification for anyone who might be confused by the comment.)

I currently live in Humboldt Park, and before that, West Humboldt Park. I like it here, but you shouldn't be naive enough to think that it's a great neighborhood when you move in. The rent is cheap, you can live next to an amazing park/boulevard system, there's a few good eat/drink spots near California Ave, and it's a walkable distance to Wicker and Logan Park. Downsides are theft, violence, vandalism from gangs, gentrification stress, etc. I find the the negatives and positives balance out if you can find a good place on a good block. We saved $450/mo when we moved from Noble Square to West Humboldt, but I think those sort of deals are getting harder to come by.

Just go to the corner of Kedzie and Chicago and see. It's not "bad" as far as being unsafe to commute back and forth but it's not exactly a walkable area or anything worth walking to but the rent is cheap.

I would like to add that living west of Humboldt park for the last three months has drastically improved my attitude towards the area. The block is family oriented and the neighbors are all very friendly. I have had multiple conversations with people just walking down the who were interested in biking or trying to sell me a bike. (I bought one old schwinn chromoly for $15 but the frame is bent :( ) 

The price of a full house is low enough to keep my wallet fat and the extra 2 miles of commuting keeps my tummy flat(ish). We have a room opening up soon as well, and I will post to the chainlink if we need to pursue tenants beyond our circle of friends. You can PM me if your itch to move is too powerful and you love cleaning.
