Last night I went to scout the newly opened Breakroom Brewery for a few reasons:

1. Food and beer - how is it?

Exceptional. Attention to detail, great presentation, and very tasty.

2. Bike parking - This isn't an area that has a lot of bike parking set up. There is an iron fence on the other side of the street as well as some poles but not a lot of parking. I talked with them last night about some possibilities.

They are not sure how to acquire or borrow a bike corral. Neither am I. I'd love to help them if anyone knows of any leads so I am asking Chainlinkers... Does anyone know how they would get a bike corral? Your help is much appreciated!

I've seen a lot of cyclists on Facebook already head over to The Breakroom and from all appearances, this looks like a popular location that could also benefit from being bike friendly beyond our Chainlink Bar Night.

And on a side note, we have over 75 people that have RSVPd yes. This looks like it will be a very enjoyable CL Bar Night. Also, Po Campo is providing a very nice (unisex) Black Loop Pannier for the monthly raffle to raise money for Bikes N' Roses.

My idea is to meet downtown at Daley Plaza at around 6 and then head over to the lakefront so we can gather as many people and as many Divvies as possible. We can go around a few neighborhoods N & S and stop in at Divvy Stations to switch bikes with each other. Let's hope there's still snow!

Re. people who don't have lights... I see it as my personal mission in life to hand out blinkies and front lights. I carry at least 2 flashlights on me at all times. I frequently hand out a $4 LED flashlight with a fat rubberband wrapped around it. You can buy these at most hardware stores, some Walgreens, grocery stores, etc. It takes literally 5 seconds to mount it to their handlebars, and people are so universally grateful for it. Almost no one knows that front lights are the law in IL. The blinkies I buy are from trade show premiums, and run about $1.50/piece if you buy 75 or more. You can also spend a bit more (about $3/light) to get a bike mounted blinkie from China. Yes, I know this is not the best sort of business to support (buy local!), but I can't afford to buy these for freebies if they aren't super cheap.

There was another discussion today (whether serious or not, I'm still not sure) about mounting a particularly bright light. That discussion raised a question that has nagged at me since it started getting dark at about 2:00 pm: when is a bicycle headlight too bright?

When commuting in winter, I rarely ride when the sun is up. And I use a pretty bright headlight (a Light & Motion Seca 700). I like the bright headlight because cars see me coming.

For a good chunk of my ride, however, I'm on the Lake Front Path. I still like the bright light there, because it really lights up the trail. Cyclists coming the other way, yeah, they're often not so fond of the light. Often, such cyclists are not using any lights at all, so I don't pay them a lot of heed. Of course, I run into plenty of cyclists that are using lights that seem to be as bright as mine. Still, I don't want to be an a--hole. So I often will hood the light with my hand when I see an oncoming cyclist, much as I would dim my high beams if I were in a car.
