Okay, Here's my opinion: Most people don't need both a front and a rear basket for a commute. I've survived on less, and never used an actual basket. I've never heard of this company named Fabric for lights and in my daily commuting experience, you want something that is waterproof and has a good warranty(Blackburn). Never wanted to mount my phone, I've got enough issues with people driving and playing with theirs. Headphones are stupid. Seriously, you should be aware of things around you, not trying to drown them out, I like my bluetooth speaker, because it let's people know I'm near and I still hear things. Unless you're using dynamo lights on your bike, I'm not sure why you would need a dynamo for your commute. GPS. Seriously. Who uses GPS to get to and from work? I mean, yeah there's strava, but do you really need a dedicated GPS to get to and from the same place everyday? Also, below the GPS link, they suggest keeping your phone in your pocket, which negates the need for the phone mount. Road Bike Repair kit...well, I'm indifferent. I've carried a full kit and went a year without using it, but I've rode without one and got flats a few times in a week. I've used it to help others, but the best option is to make sure you've maintained your ride.

I'm pretty sure that comes across as snobby. I'm alright with that.
Like a couple of you out there, I use the car-shares so I can avoid car ownership and rely on biking everywhere. So I find that car-sharing does enable the bike lifestyle to some degree. It's an issue of convenience as much as ideology, but this buyout certainly does bring Zipcar down a notch in my opinion. I'd like to know how others feel.

In case you blinked last week and missed the acquisition of yet another start-up company by a mega corporation, the car rental mogul Avis Budget Group, Inc bought out Zipcar, Inc for $500 million.

Though currently under investigation, the transaction is expected to be completed by this spring. Here's the official press release.

While some concern has been voiced around the web that Avis will "ruin" Zipcar (the company, but especially the user experience), I'm wondering about something else entirely.

Does this merger render irrelevant Zipcar's long-touted "green benefits"? The fleet whose list of eco-savvy taglines includes Fewer cars. Way fewer. is about to acquire one million additional vehicles. Does anyone else find that funny?

Or is it okay, since Zipcar's goal has always been to rent you a car - with any sort of environmental or societal benefits being merely incidental, though perfect for marketing purposes?

In the mean time, I-Go take note: if the predictions manifest and Zipcar makes some less-than-pretty changes, you may have a fresh shot at the market.

In an eighteen-minute podcast, the masterminds at Planet Money with whom I went to college paint a graphic yet entertaining picture of the pro-cycling drug scene. Most impressionable: all the blood bags, IVs hanging from hotel room walls, race injuries faked to juice-up in the back of a van, and of course, the Mafia-esque code of silence surrounding the whole thing.

Then this article in the beloved Slate is also pretty dope. Why You Hate Cyclists. Partially because of jerks like me. But mostly it's your own illogical mind.

Saksa is pretty funny in explaining the cause of the kind of deep-seated, knee-jerk tension between drivers and cyclists that we see filter through The Chainlink forum almost every day. Answer: emotion trumps logic. But still an informative read:

"...lots of drivers assume all people on bikes are assholes like me. In doing so, these motorists are making an inductive fallacy, not unlike saying, "Of course he beat me at basketball—he’s Asian like Jeremy Lin and Yao Ming." Now, you might be thinking to yourself that you’ve seen more than one or two suicidal cyclists in your day—that these roaches on two wheels are an infestation that’s practically begging to be squished underfoot (and by “foot” you mean “my Yukon Denali”).

First off—wow, that is disturbingly violent. Second, your estimate of the number of asshole cyclists and the degree of their assholery is skewed by what behavioral economists like Daniel Kahneman call the affect heuristic, which is a fancy way of saying that people make judgments by consulting their emotions instead of logic."

Ration. We'll let it shore-up the exceptionally heavy onslaught of bicycle hate that we are ignoring this week. ;-)

As calls for mandatory helmet laws continue to gather pace in the UK and particularly inNorthern Ireland, where the issue is further advanced, there are places where such laws are being repealed.

As argued by anti compulsion groups here, research in Israel has shown that the wearing of cycle helmets within the city boundary of Tel Aviv not only deters people from cycling, but also discourages those thinking of taking up the pastime.

With the cities cycle hire scheme under threat from the lack of enthusiasm the government have this week passed the third part of the process in repealing the cycle helmet law.

This move follows that in Mexico City where similar mandatory cycle helmet laws were repealed in February 2010.

Again, the main reason for the Mexico City repeal centres around a proposed bicycle sharing facility. Both cities have clearly decided that for any bike sharing facility to be successful and deliver all of the benefits associated with them (health, reduced fatality rates, lower emissions, improved traffic flows) the mandatory use of cycle helmets can not exist.

Both cities also had issues with enforceability of the law in any event.

Mandatory helmet laws in the UK are still very much on the minds of some politicians. With the London cycle hire scheme being an overwhelming success and similar shared use schemes being planned in a lot of our towns and cities, would the success for such schemes, or dare I suggest the commercial viability of such schemes, be the single most important factor in such a law not coming into force.

It’s very much time to watch this space………
