hey ya'll- i'm sure many of you have converted geared bikes to single speeds. I'm considering doing that myself also. I'm finding lots of info about what to do with the rear of the drive train- spacers, a chain tensioner, and all that jazz. I'm not finding too much concise info about the front. I know I need to get a ss specific chain ring, but i'd rather get a shiny new crankset than put on a new chain ring/bash guard.

my question is, is there a means of measuring the bb shell to be certain a new crankset will fit, or are most of them universal? i assume that you can buy most cranksets with a new bb included.

Hello All,

I recently bought '64 Raleigh AMF 3-speed. One of the upgrades I have been researching is a modern crankset. But before I do that I would at least like to service the Bottom Bracket. Since the bike is so old, and I don't know when it was last repacked, I need to prepare for the possibility of the BB needing to be replaced. Unfortunately, these old Raleighs have unique threadings and shell diameters, making most BB's out there unusable. According to Sheldon Brown's website,…

According to Sheldon Brown's website, the only two that will work are Phil Wood ($$$$) and the Shimano UN72 (discontinued).

So, dear Chainlink people, I'm wondering if anyone out there knows where I can get this Shimano or even a still usable used Phil Wood BB.

Thanks

First Build-Up...tag:thechainlink.org,2009-01-06:2211490:Topic:359002009-01-06T22:00:55.039ZJ Millshttps://thechainlink.org/profile/JMills
So, here's the deal. I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what bb to purchase. I am kind of confused as to what size I should purchase to fit a TK2. I know I need a 68mm but what overall length should I run to have proper chainline vibeage? Or, rather is there a way that I can calculate this myself?

I guess I'm just confused...
If anybody has any info or funny stories about first builds I'd love to hear them as well.
Any information would be most helpful!
Thank you and I hope the new…
