We ride to celebrate history. We ride to create community. We ride to encourage people to get moving and get involved in their community! We ride in Roseland, Roseland Heights, Rosemoor, and the Historic Pullman neighborhoods. We ride to join the efforts of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign to get people moving and to get people healthy with the vehicle that we have created, Slow Roll Chicago! With our vehicle, we ride to explore a vibrant complex history of the Historic Pullman community. We ride to discover the dynamic history of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) as told at the only Black labor history museum in the nation, the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, located right in the Historic Pullman community. The legacy of the BSCP significantly impacted organized labor in America and moved on to have a major influence on the modern day Civil Rights Movement. We ride to explore the origin of America's Labor Day celebration at the Pullman State Historic Site and experience the wonderful texture of Chicago's Southside that incorporates a melting pot of history, culture, people, communities, organizations, architecture, and beauty. This is why we ride.

Thanks to Oboi, Jamal, and the rest of the Slow Roll squad.  Only thing you messed up on was the weather! :-) Fun and educational day.  I hope in November we all get to sit down together to eat so we can learn more about one another.  In the interim, work on that weather thing, please.

Here's a cool article about Slow Roll Chicago that was posted today online:

It's over on the DNAinfo.com website and is written by Wendell Hutson. Thanks much! Slow Roll Chicago... ‪#‎SlowRollCHI‬

Hey Lisa - Thanks for the note. It's easy for all of us to get caught up in our very own bubble of Chicago. And, exploring deeply the beauty of all of Chicago takes effort and sometimes a willingness to be a bit uncomfortable in unfamiliar surroundings. This is true for me also. As a native Southsider, I have lots to learn about the Westside and Northside. And, looking forward to exploring those parts of Chicago through the vehicle of Slow Roll Chicago. Thanks much, be well and see you on Sat morn...

North sider that I am, I never realized the amount of history and architecture to be found south until some other rides earlier this year. Really looking forward to doing this one.

Slow Roll Chicago is a community-based organization utilizing the activity of bicycling to connect a diverse group of people and improve the condition of communities by organizing community bicycle rides and other bicycling-related programs throughout the greater Chicago area. Slow Roll Chicago works to achieve equity in bicycle access, bicycle usage, bicycle infrastructure, bicycle safety, bicycle culture, and other bicycle-related resources in Chicago with particular focus on communities on the Southside and Westside, making our communities healthier, more empowered, more economically viable, more socially cohesive, more bikeable, and ultimately more liveable.
