Protected bike lanes are protected from plows.  Fortunately, there was almost no traffic on Milwaukee this morning as I rode in the single traffic lane crossing the Kennedy Expressway.  Kinzie was better, but there was a pile of snow on the west side of the bridge.  On Dearborn just south of Kinzie, the lane was covered in a couple of inches of snow onto which salt had been thrown, but without traffic, the salt was doing nothing.

Protected bike lanes help eliminate perceived risk and fear of collisions; reduce the risk of crashing into car doors; and add a level of predictability making streets safer for everyone. Except when they don't.

Lovely last of 2015 photos. Happy New Year!

Thanks, Lisa ... to you and Rick, also.

I was feeling pretty good about getting out to go for a ride up Sheridan Road in the cold until I made the mistake of stopping at Tower Road Beach, where a number of people were surfing. Brrr.

People surfing in winter in Lake Michigan. Brrrrr indeed!

I looked at Eli's picture when he posted yesterday, but didn't see any surfers. (I assumed that was his bike in the foreground...) After seeing Yasmeen's reply, I looked again. Still no surfers, wind or wave. Am I missing something? (I agree, this doesn't really seem like surfing weather.)
