Think of this as a Missed Connection.

You blew the red light east bound on Lawrence at Damen at 5:26 pm this evening.

 

There was enough time for the biker in front of me to make it half way into the intersection, northbound on Damen, before you came whizzing past my front wheel.

 

I yelled "You're an idiot!" at your big haired chick, self, and you looked back at me. I meant it!

 

I woulda testified for any of the cars, that managed to not kill you, if they had.

Yeah, saw that about two months after my experience. Mine came from the sergeant on duty, so I don't hold out much hope.

Here are some useful items from the Municipal Code of Chicago (MCC) and the Illinois Vehicle Code (ILVC):

MCC 9-40-160 Drivers are required to exercise due care

MCC 9-16-020 (f) Improper right turn in front of cyclist

MCC 9-16-020 (e) Yield right-of-way to a bicycle on left turn

MCC 9-36-010 (c) Overtaking cyclist at an unsafe distance (<3')

MCC 9-80-035 Open door in traffic, either side ("dooring"... $1,000 fine)

MCC 9-40-060 Drive/park vehicle on bike lane/path or marked shared lane. "Subject to fine and immediate towing"

ILVC 5/11-1505 (a) Permits bicycles to travel farther from curb as needed for safety

ILVC 5/11-1505 (b) Permits bicycles to travel in left lane on 1-way streets

ILVC 5/11-1510 (a) Permits bicycles to turn left from left lane

I'm going to carry these with me just in case  find a police officer who cares.

I'm not around DesPlaines much, but DuPage County is full of people like that. They would often yell at me as they zipped past me on Army Trail or Bloomingdale Road or St Charles Road. I was near the curb and not 'in their way' at all. My mere presence was enough to offend them.

Anyone else get buzzed by turdpants riding the motorized bicycle in the bike lanes on Elston or Milwaukee this morning? He passed me on the right on Elston before North Ave. He never got too far ahead of me and saw him buzz at least 10 other riders between there and when I got onto Kinzie. I made fun of him when I caught up to him a second time at the Kinzie/Milwaukee split. He could barely get the bike moving from a stop.

Southport and Clybourn clearly in the left turn lane behind another vehicle as I went straight and began to turn left you decided to pass me on the left and go straight!?
I scraped the side of your car as you continued...I hope it left a nice scratch.

,Last week you were test driving a Mercedes then from 3 lanes to the right of me decided you need to turn LEFT NOW! I yelled and banged on the side, but the CPD appreciate your drama for calling 911 when you almost hit ME!

A rare post for me and I'm sure I'm violating the spirit of this thread but I just had to call out the woman riding the well-broken in, white straight bar road bike with the rack and black bike bag north on the LFT between 6:00 and 6:30 last night.  If I was carrying gold-star stickers, I would have awarded one to you before we parted ways for some of the most conscientious cycling I've seen commuting.  You road fast but slowed where you needed to in crowded areas.  You called out to bikers/runners/walkers and runners when overtaking them and made generous use of signals.  Sadly, this is the exception rather than the norm, particularly during amateur season.  In any event, nice riding.

I disagree about it being an exception rather than the norm. There is a good majority of conscientious cycling commuters out there as well as the usual amount of amateur knuckleheads. People like to concentrate and magnify on the negative cyclists out there while taking for granted the good riding cyclists. I hope you learned some valuable tips from this cyclist to pass along to others.

I'm afraid my experience is more in line with Wuffie's. I'd estimate the prevalence of cyclists following (even *approximately* following) the rules and exhibiting courtesy for other road users to be 10% or less. I wish I could say otherwise.

I agree with Steve and Wuffie. The number of cyclists passing me at red lights when I'm holding my lane because I'm part of traffic always disappoints. 10% or less is accurate.
