I'm no mapmaker, but here is a vote to show the South Side some love. A big June Mass riding down King Drive would be pretty nice.

I'd support a ride to the south side, maybe a trip through hyde park, kenwood, and bronzeville. However, how about doing it in July since I'm out of town during the june mass?

I like the idea of a trip down the lake front to the south side. This would be my first one...so, in the past have the riders typically been allowed to pass out flyers to rallies/protests, pass around petitions, or give out buttons/flags?

I ask because there are a number of environmental actions coming up...as well as the long standing movement to shut down the Olympic bid for Chicago.

Other than that...I hope we have fun and meet great people

June Mass has been discussed among friends as a good opportunity for bare as you dare. I plan to consider July and August that way as well. World Naked Bike Ride mailing list may be notified to that effect about June. A lot of riders in WNBRC6 last Saturday, many not familiar with CCM, seemed really psyched about the idea and would come out. I'm not currently showing anything city-wise happening in the plaza. Pursuant to this idea, I plan to bring my UV body paints, and encourage other artist friends to do similar. And Rats, I'll try to bring my WNBRC excess snack bars for bake sale.

I just posted this to the Critical Mass mailing listserve but I figure it should go here as well...

You may already know that the Fraternal Order of Police here in Chicago are hosting a 1968 Democratic National Convention Police Riot Reunion (chicagoriotcops.com). For a little context Time Out Chicago did a blog post about the event, http://bit.ly/fvNFE. They'll be doing an interview with us about it sometime this week.

Today, the 16th of June, Chicago Copwatch will be hosting a 1968 Reunion Protest organizational meeting for any interested party this coming Tuesday the 16th at the U.E. Hall., 37 S. Ashland, around 7pm. The meeting will be held in the United Electrical Workers Local room. For anyone seeking more information please contact 1968@chicagocopwatch.org. The purpose of this meeting is get as many interested communities, groups and individuals to participate in the planning of our protest. It just happens to be the same day as the mass!

Because this is a controversial map idea I would like to see as many members of Critical Mass there as possible. We need to explore our map options! I say this because a few people have expressed dislike for the idea while others are fully in support and very enthused about it. Martin already explain how the mass is really a just a Xerocracy. The person who passes out the most maps and is best at leading the mass is typically the winner. I am not a fan of this competitive map attitude.

Though I have done this in the past with degrees of success I find that a compromise map that makes every interested party happy is usually the best solution. Some options proposed thus far are actually stopping the mass at the protest, doing a Chicago Hold-Up or just passing the march/protest in solidarity.

So... If you have an opinion come to tonight's planning meeting! Tuesday the 16th at the U.E. Hall., 37 S. Ashland, around 7pm. The meeting will be held in the United Electrical Workers Local room

Well put. I also like win-win solutions. But I must fundamentally point out that if we go the OPPOSITE direction, well, all the cops will be over there... away from us. My general rule in life is where there is police activity (such as a reunion) go the other way.
ALSO, there is precedence for reduced clothing through summer CCMs, however WNBR-C has been directly discouraged from bringing semi-nudes near Union Park. So my peeps would be in danger.

Take us somewhere comfortable, maybe a distant beach.

I agree. If we know where a bunch of cops will be. We can be somewhere else. And I certanly wouldnt want to antagonise a bunch of police who may get nostalgic for the "good old days"
Let them have their reunion and leave them alone I say.

The idea of an attempted stop at the protest has been rejected as unrealistic. Like I said in prior emails these are just ideas and any participant that attends the meetings can get there opinions included into the process of making our map. Currently we are working on an idea which has shifted to be more of a '68 & Days of Rage themed map with the end destination being Grant Park. The tentative name is "Can't Quite The Riot." Ha! Love it. That's Steven's idea. So at this point the ride we are proposing has very little to do with the FOP protest other than a general theme and the possibility of passing the FOP Reunion during the beginning part of the ride.

So let's discuss this map here! Give us your ideas.

Hasn't there been an opening night ride to the Tastes? I'm not thinking race to the taste, I remember a ride, but couldn't find it now. Also, how cool is the city with CCM in GP?

Note the following specifically near Grant Park that night:
7:30-9pm Hutchinson Field: "Dew Tour" BMX Dirt Finals.
5:30-?pm Petrillo: Charlie Wilson (Gap Band) and Cameo.
6-9:30pm 601 S Michigan: Summerdance

Also note Taste of Randolph (since 1998), Randolph and Halsted.

The south rides are always nice. I get to visit some neighborhoods I normally don't get around to often. That said things tend to get hairy on those rides (like may's mass) if we can keep the mass somewhat together, I'd be down but things tend to get strung out. As far as going towards the taste, I think thats a bad idea, the police would not let a horde of bikes get anywhere near the taste and they might have to show some "force" with paddy wagons and such. That happened on a mass last year, I think, and none of the charges stuck but there is no need to test those waters when we all just want to party on our bikes.
