The 'Alerts' thing - does anyone ever use it??

Right there below the 'Inbox' it says 'Alerts' and I have never used it or gotten an alert, is there something I am missing?

"Alerts are messages sent to you by Apps you or your friends have added.
You have no alerts at this time."

Yea, but are their any apps that connect with the site? Nothing as far as I know.  I'm just curious, I've been seeing that line there an it seems to never do anything at all.

I don't use those alerts, but I do use Google Alerts.
