Anyone ride Velocity A23 rims in the city? I'm looking at a wheelset - but I'm thinking my largeness + potholes wouldn't work ...

They are a very strong rim, you should be fine.
The Velocity Dyad is another great choice, and very similar looking to the A23, if you're looking for something more stout.
Of course, the rim is just one aspect of the wheel. So if you're tough on equipment, consider spoke count, spoke design, and tire width to really come up with the best wheel for your needs. Also, having the wheel hand-built by a professional is always going to give you the best results.
I have A23 (700 - 36 spoke) on my Trek commuter and Dyad (700 - 36 spoke) on my LHT - both sets built myself - Can't go wrong with Velocity.
32h/32h Dyads on my commuter with a dyno hub. Worry free and had never needed truing.
24h/28h A23 full-on weight weenie wheelset on my road/CX bike with DT hubs and butted spokes. Awesome wheelset! Strong and svelte.
How much do you weigh?
What kind of tires are you looking for on this set?
I have a set of A23's Schmidt Dynohub up front, White Industries Hub in the rear. Weigh currently around 190. I build the wheels myself with Wheelsmith 14 gauge spokes. No commuting perse, but I do long rides, all starting at my home and into the suburbs. No problems whatsoever. They stay true, and they are an absolute joy to ride.
The A23's have apparently the optimal tire seat depth.I installed them with grand Bois Cypres tires (700x32), Stan's Notube rim tape, and Schwalbe tubes. They were the easiest tire I've ever mounted. Not too tight, not too loose, perfectly sitting in the well.
If you are really heavy, maybe you should look for dyads instead. We have them on our tandem laced against DT tandem hubs, with Marathon Supreme tires, also in 700x32c. They are handbuilt by Co-Motion Cycles. I have to check the spoke count, but it likely 40 or more. Together with bike, and lots of stuff, we weighed about 420-430 lbs at our max. I have hit some absolutely monstrous potholes going downhill at 25-30 mph. Never had any trouble with it. Wheels stayed absolutely true
