So in light of recent happenings I cannot discuss at this moment I have been thinking about having a camera to record my commute and rides and protect myself from the costs of not having anything to go off of in case of an incident. So best place to ask I world imagine is here!

For those that record your rides , what camera do you use? Trying not to break the bank so a GoPro is currently out of the budget.

Next, I will only have the budget for one for now but what's the best place to mount it? Helmet, facing the rear on the bike frame, facing front, etc.

I did a search but some dead links came up so sorry if this is a repeat topic!

HANDS DOWN THERE IS A REASON THIS IS THE BEST CAMERA FOR WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!!!!

so many mounting options your head will spin!!!!!!

If you are willing to part with it I'd be willing to make the trek from the NW side to you this week. I'll be by the uic area tomorrow night or can pop out in the wife's car tonight if you get this and still up.

Otherwise really any night this week will work. And definitely the later the better, less traffic. Perhaps I can bring you a 6er of brew for it?

I have one that I think is basically the same as this:
http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/the-sharper-image-action-camera-...
that you can have if you can make it to my place at a time that's convenient for me (24th/Western, the later the better).
I paid $20 after rebate... tried it for a while on my helmet and ended up feeling like it was messing with the discs in my neck, which are already a very finite resource.... no interest in having anything mounted to the bike.

I have a Hero3 Black, and I honestly don't think the video quality is all that great even in really good light. I've been doing a lot of filming with it recently and haven't even come close to any of the quality of their promo footage shots. Also, the battery life is quite limited and not necessarily something that will last you on a 2 hour ride.

There is an actioncam from Monoprice that's ~$80: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=10159

There's also the cycling-specific Rideye, which is more expensive at ~$140.

There are also many, many cheaper action-cams on ebay and the like:

If I could only start to tell you about the hours spent in Premiere and After Effects.... AND GoPro Studio.

A lot of the magic that makes the GoPro demo videos look so good is in the editing. Just viewing the compressed .mp4 files that come off the sdcard will NEVER look as good as a properly edited video.

Practice, practice, practice. It ain't easy.
