The Chainlink

Hi, did anyone here start/finish the 400 this weekend?

I (Terry, burgundy MAP) was there, and I suspect the Eric Peterson there was the same seen here in this group. I met, rode with and hung out with a a really great group of people ("met" is a misnomer; I was ride-brained enough to not be on my social graces game, sorry).

Hey Terry.  It was great riding with you and the gang in the night time hours.  I'm the guy with the Bridgestone 650b conversion.  Thanks for sharing your beer after the ride!

Jason

Yes I am that Eric Peterson. It's great to see some new enthusiastic riders, especially on a longer distance such as the 400K, which is more of an adventure with the nighttime riding, navigation, and yes gravel roads after midnight (for most riders anyway). Although the heat slowed me down, I am glad that I got back in time for a beer (thanks to Dan Diehn) and to hear some stories. I was on the red Bridgestone RB1.

I had one pretty weird encounter after dark. After Lake Mills there are a couple of left turns, and each time I had to wait for traffic before making the turn. On the second turn, a car pulled up and this older driver rolled down the passenger side window and started talking to me: "Hey I know you, you're that biker guy. We've talked before, and I see you riding out there on Cty-T."  Then he told me that it was his birthday. That was kind of creepy. I could see in the car that it was filled with junk. I just said something non-committal and then he drove away. Never seen anything like that before.

On the plus side while driving through Devil's Lake, a car pulled up alongside me and a woman asked if I was doing a brevet. Not being in a talkative mood I just said "Yes". She said that was really cool and they drove off.

Nice meeting you as well Terry, I am Joe on the soma. It was a great ride the pack was a great way to finish it up. Looking forward to the 600 at the end of the month. If any one is intrested , i may do the FVP one of the next couple of weekends to keep the juices flowing. If anyone would like to join me let me know.

Hey folks! Post-ride beers, especially after that ride, sure seemed like a nice and appropriate celebration. I agree with you Jason, this was a great group to ride & finish with. Maybe a swing by Tyranena in Lake Mills for ride completion growlers could be added to the cue sheet (those that carry them get a 20 minute bonus, ha!).

I do remember you, Eric! I even remember the RB-1 from when I was doing the 300K a few weeks ago when I saw it at the Oregon control. So, that's 2 Bridgestones I've met, which I think is really quite cool. Jason Marshall did a really good looking 650B conversion on his (it wasn't an RB-1, if I recall correctly).

Joe, I will be wanting to check out the FVP as well, but I don't think I can do it before then end of the month. But I'll be back up the last weekend in June for the 600K as well. (Were you in a red jersey?)

I think another guy I met at the 300 a few weeks ago is going for his SR. He'll be looking at the 600K too, and we're all "new" to this. (I've been wanting to try this for a few years, in fact.) There's desire here for PBP in 2015, but that's probably another discussion thread.

Back to the 400 ... how about Freedom Road! And aren't you happy you didn't have to climb Happy Hill?

Some GLR History...

Happy Hill Road - in 2005 the 400K route did in fact go up this road, which was followed by a 50+ MPH descent of Freedom Rd. In 2005 the route covered much of the same territory, but in a CCW direction. So for example you climbed up those roads in Devil's Lake.

The 2005 route went in a more direct route to Baraboo via Sun Prairie and DeForest, and from Sauk City went down through New Glarus then back toward Delavan. This was felt to have too many hills in the dark, so in 2006 they reversed the direction.

Going up those wonderful roads in Devil's Lake would not be nearly as fun :)
