Traveling eastbound on Kinzie, at Clinton, there is a stop sign. Beneath the stop sign is a smaller sign that says, "[bike symbol] stop for peds."

What does this sign mean?

(a) All traffic--both bikes and cars--must stop here, and hey, cyclists, that really means you too.

(b) Cars must stop but, even though there is a stop sign, bikes at this intersection only need to stop for peds.

I assume the answer is (a) but the sign does sort of make it seem like bikes need to stop for peds only.

This sign?

Aren't they reminding cars to stop for bikes and pedestrians?

No, it's the next block down. I could have the intersection slightly wrong.

At the intersection I'm talking about, there is nothing above the stop sign. Below the stop sign is a small sign that says, "[Bikes] stop for peds"

Okay, I just looked at Google Street view. It is Kinzie and Clinton. The sign you posted is there, on one of the support beams beneath the overpass. But the sign I'm describing is also there. You can see both signs in Street View, though not very well.

Ah, I think I was pointed in the wrong direction. My guess would be that city officials have had trouble with bikes not stopping for pedestrians there, so they added a little reminder. (You've just come zooming down the hill from Canal, right? :-)

Is there a pediatric clinic nearby? It's probably a message to the patients reassuring them that cyclists will stop for them.
