Chainlink!

I have a really lovely 1980's Terry (still trying to figure out the exact model) that I got from Working Bikes last year. Anyway, the winter blew me out bad, and so I tried to replace my tire BEFORE I thought it would blew out. Due to UPS shenanigans, I didn't get it until last night.... when I realized the wrong size had been sent to me.

Before I have to go through the rigamarole of shipping it BACK to Terry, I wondered if anyone had a lead on a 24 and 1 1/4 Tire? (I've mostly seen Tellus or Schwalbe) Or you work for an LBS or someone who deals Terry? I'm totally willing to sell or trade this stupid fat hybrid tire for it or pay you. I gotta get back in the saddle.

Any tips are very much appreciated!

That is a lot of bad luck to have for one tire! Jeeze.

Are you talking about a 650c tire?  I am assuming this is a road bike.  Some of the Terry's are made with a 650c wheel in the front and a 700 in the back.  Would could get you the right tire for sure.  The best way to make sure it's the right one, is to bring it in, if you can.

If BFF can't help you, the Classic Rendezvous folks over on Google Groups or the C&V forum on bikeforums.net will have one or more denizens who know where to find this your tire. They are purveyors of all sorts of vintage bike arcana. (I wouldn't be surprised if someone there has a tire for you.)

ha ha ha duh! thanks Julie!

You don't need to go to a Terry dealer. Any local bike shop can help you order the right tire.

I mean, yes, I understand that. I could have my LBS order it from QBP or ideally Olympic as they're closer, but the goal would be someone who would have it in stock right now.

Vanessa, I'll be calling you shortly!

It is not a 650; she says right in her post that it is a 24" tire which, on a Terry front could be a 520 or 547 ISO but if it is labeled 24x 1 1/4 is *should* be a 547.  To my knowledge Terry never made a mixed wheel size bike with a 650 front.

Any bike shop can order it for you but a very much doubt you will find anywhere with it in stock, it is a VERY uncommon size.

FWIW, if you ordered it from a shop it would have been here in under a week, there would have been no shipping and you probably would have gotten the right thing the first time.

IJS.

Just went through this for my wife's bike -- an '80's Miyata with the small front wheel.  Ordered from Upgrade Cycle on Chicago, just west of Milwaukee.  Just took a day to get it.  Got a nice Panasonic Panaracer 24 x 1 for about $25.  They also may have it in stock at Rapid Transit on North, but it costs about $10 more.  Also, I'm pretty sure the 24x1 is a 520 and 24x1 1/4 was a 540.  The 520 fit her bike, the 540 did not.  Good luck -- I know what you're going through.

Sheldon Brown seems to suggest 540-541 ISO size for an "older" (how much older?) Terry but a look at the manufacturer site and more detailed pages on sheldonbrown show that it could be 520, 540, or 571 (which=650C, and in rim circumference at least also a Schwinn size). Better yet, the first two are marked the same sometimes. Maybe 24 x 1 ¼ is 547. I guess you should bring it in somewhere. Good luck.

We have a 24 x 1 in stock (ISO 540 x 23) at Blue City. Kenda Koncept brand, $20
