Scheduling a Chicago Area League Cycling Instructor Certification Seminar (LCI Seminar)

This is a survey to determine if there is sufficient interest to hold a League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructor Certification Seminar (LCI Seminar) in or near Chicago between now and the summer of 2014.

Information about the LCI Seminar and answers to Frequently Asked Questions are available at: http://www.bikeleague.org/content/become-instructor

The survey is at:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FW6LR3J

Please take the survey if you are interested in attending a LCI Seminar, or if you represent an advocacy group, bike shop, or other organization which plans to send one or more people to a LCI Seminar.  Note that the responses received by Monday Aug 26 will determine if it is possible to hold one this fall, mid Nov 2013.  Survey will close Sept 1.

Please feel free to forward this as e-mail to anyone you know who might be interested in attending an LCI Seminar.

Feel free to contact me by e-mail or phone me if you have any questions about the LCI Seminar or this survey.

I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you at a seminar.

Larry, or others who do know this.

Where in Chicago could I complete a Traffic Skills 101 class, a prerequisite for taking the LCI class?

I looked at the LAB website but could not find any information specific to where classes are offered.

Thanks.

Looks like there aren't classes for Traffic Skills 101, but that you can do the course online and then do the on-bike portion with anyone who is a registered LCI, then they recommend you for the LCI training. Also, I found that one has to maintain membership in the League (obvious, but...) for $40/year in addition to $25 annually after the first year, when you pay the $300 for the course.

Lots of Chainlinkers to learn from! http://www.bikeleague.org/bfa/search/list?bfaq=60618#education

Hi Duppie,

There are some issues with LAB's newly redesigned web site.  The classes do show up under search under Illinois then select Education.  Classes are there, but the LCI list is wrong.  To see LCIs search under a zip codwe

The next next Chicago area Traffic Skills 101 class is on 10/05 in Elk Grove Village.  Contact David Simmons   simmons68@sbcglobal.net  for details.  Other classes will be scheduled to ensure that everyone who signs up for the LCI Seminar can complete a Traffic Skills 101 in time.

A Traffic Skills 101 class is roughly 4 1/2 hours of  classroom instruction and 4 1/2 hours of on-bike instruction.  The classroom instruction can be taken with an LCI or on-line at http://bikeed.org  If you do take the on-line course, please register in the Northern Illinois region.  The on-bike instruction has to be with an LCI.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for posting that link to the correct list of LCIs in Illinois.  The general LCI info and FAQ is http://www.bikeleague.org/content/become-instructor

The annual fee includes $3,000,000 general liability insurance in case one of your students gets hurt during or after a class.  To stay certified, an LCI must also complete 12 hours of continuing education credits each year.   Teaching, making presentations, attending bike related classes or webinars, and participating in bike advocacy activities all count towards the continuing education credits.

May I add that there are a few Chainlinkers who are LCIs (besides Larry).

Larry,

Thanks for responding. Will you be scheduling a class in the city? I live in the city, don't own a car, so getting to place like Elk Grove Village is a pain.

Otherwise I may do the online/LCI instructor combo.

Thanks.

Duppie,

Dave's class in EGV will be the on-bike session only.

I won't know for sure where additional TS 101 classes will be held until the survey results are in next week.   I'd like to see one in the city, but getting proper permission to use a parking lot for on-bike activities is always a problem.

In case we can't, how much of a pain would it be for you to catch a Metra south line train to Homewood?
