The Chainlink

Lovely ride today & I'm still feeling good, in spite of those 3 wanna-be Olympians but didn't make the cut, speeding down a very crowded (w/ small children) lake shore bike path.  I don't understand why those idiot few feel the need to rudely scream and yell "on your left" at people when most other bikers are either ringing a bell &/or simply saying, not nastily yelling, "on your left" or "passing" followed by a "thank-you."  What's so wrong w/ being kind & decent? I don't get the rudeness and I believe that eventually they're going to encounter one of those muscle bound jogger dudes that'll knock them the F-OUT! No one takes kindly to some jerk yelling at them for no reason & there's a few out there that will retaliate, so watch yourselves rude boyz...

... & yes, I know & understand that some people aren't paying attention and have selective hearing but don't assume (making an ass out of U & not me) that ALL people walking, riding, roller-blading, skateboarding slower than you is dumb enough to get in your fools way.

Ok, I'm done & am putting the soap box away...

Have you ever said OYL at a normal volume level to a person wearing the omnipresent earbuds, and then while passing them you scare the heck out of them because they could not hear you? I have and feel no remorse whatsoever. Ha!

But that was their choice.

omg, that was you?

hehe

... but in all seriousness ... I laughed for like two days straight when I read this. You are hilarious!

That's EXACTLY what I usually say, except I whisper it gently into their ear while so close they feel the gentle caress of my breath.  Sometimes tongue is involved.....

"Why hello fine sir or madam! What a nice day, isn't it?! I would like to inform you that I am slowly passing on your left hand side. My aren't you fashionable today! I appreciate that you are sharing the path with me, and I hope that you truly have a wonderful day! Carry on!"

Okay I joined so I could specifically comment on this.

I have tried all kinds of ways in saying on your left.
I have screamed it, sang it, said it in a normal tone, and even not said a darn thing.
I have even described going in the middle! ( which was even worse!)
I'll be the 1st to admit I go fast. I only do so when within reason though.
If I see that it is too crowded for the speed I can go I will go on the roads instead.
However most of the time when I do pass someone I always say thank you.
Not in a demeaning way or anything like that but just to let them know I appreciate them being aware of me coming from behind.
Most of the time though I am wasting my breath. Most joggers / walkers have headphones on and never hear a thing I have said.
Do I stop saying it though? Nope. Cause the 1 time I don't will be the time where someone will veer out in front of me.
And about the time I said going in the middle,,, yeah that was a cluster!
Both people coming towards me and people I was going with were almost dead center on the path.
I said loudly coming in the middle and you guessed it they did not move.
And yet I'm the bad guy for stating my intentions! And this was not at a fast pace either maybe 10 MPH.
So yeah no matter how it is taken I will continue to say OYL.
I have to look out for my safety as well as the ones I am with on the path.
