Ghost bike placement September 2nd 2013 for Cyclist killed by motorist at 135th & Ridgeland

On June 11th Brian McDevitt took a day off work as a Chicago Policeman to spend time with his family. In the afternoon he went for a ride on the Palos path. When crossing the intersection of 135th & Ridgeland he was struck by a vehicle making a left turn. He laid in a coma at Advocate Christ Hospital for 10 days and passed away succumbing to his injuries on June 21st 2013. He would have turned 31 the following week.
Brian leaves behind his wife and two small children.
Brian was a decorated officer of the CPD earning many awards in the short time he was on the force. A great family man and avid cyclist and always had a smile on his face that will be truly missed.
We're placing a ghost bike at the scene and hope motorists will get a message from it and take more care. My wife rides this path and almost got hit several times if not for being extra cautious
We're calling this for 4:00 pm and all are welcome

Anyone who would like to join us please do. We will start or procession by bike from the US Bank parking lot at 111th and Kedzie at 3pm. A good chance to bring some terribly needed awareness to the south end with a sizeable crowd.

Ken, give us a ring and Steve and I will try to join you that day.  We ride that trail a lot, and I did not even know about the death.  A ghost bike will be a good reminder that even the safest places may not be.  Do you know whether there are plans for any future fundraising for the family?  If so, the bike community should be made aware....

"Remembering his ride, celebrating Brian" and there's bracelets and maybe a couple other fundraising options. Been a couple raffles and an event is planned at 115 Bourbon st

Thank you so much for the support, everyone. My family continues to be amazed every day by the love we are shown. Brian was an amazing police officer, father, husband, brother, son & friend. Riding his bike was truly his passion. He would be so honored by the honor he's receiving. And he deserves every minute of it. On September 2nd at 3pm, we will meet at the US Bank (11159 S Kedzie). We will ride to the intersection of my brother's accident: the southwest corner of 135th & Ridgeland. We would love for you all to be there!

This ghost bike is due to be installed in just over a week. I want to give it a little bump so as many Chainlinker's as possible know about it and have the chance to participate.
