As the title suggest, I thought  we could use this thread as a way to post open invitation training rides. This Sunday, I'm doing a lakefront ride:

Map:    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5841901

Start: Buckingham Fountain

End: Buckingham Fountain

Start Time: 9am

End Time: 11:30-noon-ish

Pace: I'd like to keep around a 14-18 mph pace

Description:

It's just simply riding the lakefront in it's entirety. It equates to about 36 miles + whatever miles it'll take to get to Buckingham and back (for me 42 total miles). Weather looks like crap for Sunday (chance of rain - 40 degrees) - from my experience training for marathons, I've found crappy conditions only make me stronger.

Anyone interested in a lakefront path jaunt tonight around 6pm?

Nothing special, we would just head down to the Southern Terminus of the path and then head back North. People could break-off when-ever wherever. Doesn't have to be fast. Thinking about meeting at Buckingham around 6pm.

This saturday I was planning on taking the Centennial trail to Joliet and the Old Plank Road trail back.

I am interested to hear your thoughts on the route to the Centennial trail. See what I came up with here: http://goo.gl/maps/linfz

It is partially based on Kelly's feedback earlier in this thread. I am mostly curious about the long stretch on 26th. Is that bike friendly, as Google says it is?

Are there any other issues with this route? I would hit this part between 7 and 9 am approximately.

I don't have any feedback on 26th street as the 2 times I've come in from Joliet, I've used Ogden.

Ogden, IMO, is a good biking road (at least on the weekends) as it's very wide in most spots and it's 4 lanes, so traffic has plenty of room to go around you and the lights are spread out so that you can really move on it. At 7-9am on a Saturday, I'm guessing traffic will be pretty light. But if you do take 26th, I'm interested to hear about this route.

BTW: Here is basically the route I take except I get on/off Ogden at Damen instead of 26th Street:

There's some very nice riding on low traffic rolling hills through the Burr Ridge / Darien area, if you bypass the I&M portion of trail.

Take Willow Springs Rd. S. -> German Church Rd. W. -> Wolf Rd. S. -> 91st W. -> Madison S. -> Jeans SW. -> Rt. 83 S. & pickup the Centennial Trail at Rt. 83.

That's part of my regular commuting route. I've never actually ridden the Rt. 83 S. portion (I park at 91st & Cass, ride from there) I'm pretty sure it's shouldered from Jeans & has a pedestrian lane over the river. I can check it out on my way home tonight if you'd like.

Sorry, no feedback on 26th from me either.

Checking that out would be cool. Google streetview shows a narrow shoulder over the river, and a pedestrian lane over the canal (which I would not be taking?)

Ok, I'll report back later this evening. That's correct, the access is between the river & canal.

There is a sidewalk on the W. side of Rt. 83 S. from Jeans to the Centennial Trail access.

A touch narrow, but in good condition & very ride-able.

I also had a look at Jeans Rd., as I've never ridden it either (I normally turn off Madison @ 97th -> Bluff -> Cass -> 91st). That's an industrial area, decent road, save for alot of loose gravel. You'll take Jeans under Rt. 83 then S. on the sidewalk to the trail access.

I think you'll find this route quite enjoyable!

Thanks, Kelly. If the weather will hold up for Saturday, i will give this a try.

Thanks for the route advice Kelly. I ended up taking Wolf Rd. down to Willow Springs Rd., mainly because i didn't pay attention when building my cuesheet.

I agree, it's a very enjoyable area to ride. I definitely have to go back to follow the other suggestions you made.

@Duppie, how was 26th?

26th was good to ride on. Industrial on the east end, it becomes more residential once you go further west. But I did ride it early on a Saturday Morning, so YMMV

Going to ride the cx bike at Palos or on the DPRT tomorrow morning. Got room for one or two in the car...
