4-year-old boy killed when bike hit by truck in northwest suburbs

A 4-year-old boy died this afternoon after the bike he was on went into traffic on a busy northwest suburban road and he was struck by a back axle of a semi-trailer truck, officials said.

The boy, identified as Jayden Jacobo of the 3200 block of West Evergreen Avenue In Chicago by the Cook County medical examiner's office, was declared dead on the scene at 1:44 p.m. in the 2200 block of East Oakton Street in unincorporated Cook County near Elk Grove Village and Mount Prospect.

The boy was on a two-wheel bike when it went down a driveway from a mobile home park in the 2300 block of Oakton about 1:30 p.m., and the bike went onto Oakton, said sheriff's spokeswoman Sophia Ansari.

The boy was hit by the rear tandem axle of a semi-tractor trailer truck that was headed west on Oakton, Ansari said.

The driver of the truck stopped, and a male passenger with her tried to help the boy, but was unable to, Ansari said.

No citations have been issued in the accident.

OMG this is so sad. and this little guy lives about 4 blocks from me. so sorry for the family and friends.

These are the stories that as a parent are just crushing to consider. It's impossible to not think of your own kids and the vulnerability of all kids. Rest in peace, Jayden.

I hate to bring this up at such a tragic time, but as a parent I would never let my 4 year old bike alone (or with another person) on the road.  Clearly insufficient monitoring and supervision.  A 4 year old has no conceptual skills to appreciate the potential dangers of the road (look at how hard it is for us adult brains).  I am so sorry to hear of this awful tragedy.  A truck once crushed the back of my very small car because the driver couldn't see me below his window.  I think the blame in this nauseating story rests with the family who didn't protect this beautiful child sufficiently.  When I bike with my 12 year old through the streets he is still instructed to go block to block on the sidewalk unless there are too many people on the side walk.  And he is 12.  And no I am not a helicopter parent as he walks 3 blocks home on his own after school from the school bus.

I wasn't trying to assign any blame with my original post, but obviously something went terribly wrong. I don't know the full circumstances, so I can't speak to them, but everyone involved is paying the price for this tragedy, most of all poor Jayden, but also his family, and the driver and passenger.

Edit: Sounds like he was being supervised at the time, but things went very wrong very quickly. He was not riding on the road.

What. The. Fuck.

The headline makes no mention of the driver who killed him, only that a boy was killed on his bike. The article calls it an accident, uses robot car terminology, and blames the victim:

But in a horrific accident Monday afternoon, the 4-year-old Chicago boy known for his bright smile fell off his bike and was fatally struck by a semi-trailer truck as he rode his two-wheeler along East Oakton Street in the northwest suburbs near Des Plaines, family and officials said.

So sad that things like this still keep happening. And the driver of the truck gets off scot-free.
