I want to try and do a DIY century. Any ideas for a 100 mile route? I am in Logan Square, and I was thinking of hitting the north channel trail up to wilmette, then maybe back down to indiana.

Has anyone done their own century?

Thanks

I rode it last month, it was all paved......or am I losing my mind?

Will,

Parts of it are on crushed lime-stone, especially west of approx. Villa Park.

Rob,

Batavia and back via the IL Prairie trail would be 100+ miles and is 100% paved. I rode it last month, it was a little sketch through Maywood but otherwise an awesome ride.

How bad are the trails? I have a track bike that does not like rough stuff at all...

Yes - get out of town! If you can tolerate crushed limestone, you also might want to consider the Illinois Prairie Path and the Fox River Trail. From Logan Square if you make a triangle of those trails I think you'd be somewhere around a century.

Or let me rephrase, if portions of it were crushed limestone, it was apparently such a non issue that I don't even remember it being that way. I was riding a SS with 700x38 tires.

You're correct. It is partially limestone, but especially during dry weather it is effortless to ride on, especially if your tires are not too narrow.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for all of the ideas!

My favorite DIY century is Logan Square out to the Des Plaines River Trail, ride north till the end of the DPRT, ride east five miles to the Robert McClory trail, take the McClory south to the Skokie Valley trail, connect to the North Branch trail, and take that back to Elston and south back to Logan Square.

Should be about 115 miles. 80% car-free century.

I do this ride regularly...plus a slightly extended version (135 miles). I ride from downtown. Hit me up for the cue sheet.

Here are a couple of my Garmin routes < I have not done either this year but normally I do one of these about once a month

Kenosha   http://connect.garmin.com/activity/226272591

Yes to this. ^^^ I've done it a couple times and it's a great ride. Lots of different vistas to stay interesting.

Look on mapmyride.com for posted routes. The North Shore Century goes from Evanston to Kenosha (and back). I believe there are several year's worth of routes. Pick one and modify to suit...
