Bike shop recommendation for commuter for teen

I'm looking for recommendations for bike shops where I can purchase a used (or inexpensive new) commuter for my young teenager to bike to high school.  I'd rather not go the Craiglist route and would like to patronize a shop within the city. 

My kid is petite and requires a rather small frame size (sub 50cm).  Your recommendations are welcome.

You might want to check with Working Bikes, the Recyclery, or other co-ops in the city.  Here in Evanston, Buchephalus sells used bikes.
