"With all the stolen bike posts lately (and no one thinking "I wonder if there's something under Useful Links for this."), I think it's well past time to make a sticky about the Stolen Bike Registry"

Well said Ryan.

Done and done.
And sticky too.

Stolen from my garage yesterday AM:
http://chicago.stolenbike.org/node/193897
distinctive fixed gear conversion from 1980s Cannondale touring bike - brushed silver aluminum...
Its already listed on the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry, but if anyone sees a blue Pilen, possibly with a kid seat still attached, its probably mine and I'd like it back. And yes, I know, I should have locked it up in the garage. And taken better pictures.
HATE YOU BIKE THIEVES!

Listed on the stolen bike registry, and police report submitted etc, but wanted to alert people here on the rare chance that you may see it / accidentally buy it. Having said that, it was a couple of weeks ago now.
Trek 7.1 FX. 2009. Black Frame. Black saddle, black straight handlebars. Shimano components, slightly rusted. Several cosmetic blemishes and chips from locking up over the years. Stock photo:
Stolen from outside my house - Kryptonite U-locked to the fence. They cut through the fence with some kind of tool. Have a hunch that is may be linked to the builders of the new house opposite - saw me use it everyday and lock it up and disappeared the last day they were working on the house.
Will provide proof of ownership / serial number if you come across anything and contact me. Also happy to work out a cash deal for rewarding its recovery!
Many thanks,
Lee.
Ugh. Went to put the tot in his stroller to walk him to daycare this morning, only see the gate to our yard and door to our garage both open. Ice in my stomach, I hand him off to the wife and check it out to see my madone and her mountain bike are both gone.
Filled a police report already, about to finish w/the stolen bike registry. Not an awesome way to get ready for bike the drive. Keep your peeled for a blue and white 5.9 or an older looking purple trek mountain bike. I'm going to go throw up now.
Thanks man. Today's motto is "it could have been worse." Our new bike trailer was still there, the stroller was there, our car wasn't broken into. It was two possessions we loved but no longer have. Everyone's healthy and we'll get new bikes eventually.
But that doesn't mean I'm not daydreaming about getting the bikes back and chasing the thieves with a bat. Or a chainsaw.
agree. that feeling in your gut and stomach is very hard to deal with. bummer. sorry about this.
I will keep an eye out for both....check craigslist and maybe even swap-o-rama for the madone?

Jeremy-- very sorry about this!
If it's any help, I got hold of one of these after my garage was broken into-- for under $20 it gives a little piece of mind:

The signal carries through the garage walls and up into my second floor kitchen (brick building) 100% reliably. Keeping on top of batteries is the only drawback...

So sorry to hear about your bike theft. It's good to post here on The Chainlink, but you'll likely get many more views if you post it on the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry, by filling out this:
http://www.chicago.stolenbike.org/node/add/content-stolen-bike-report
This page on The Chainlink will sink from view in a few days, and isn't as searchable as stolenbike.org. Good luck, hope you find your bike again.
Make sure you file a report with the UIC Police--they're state troopers and have been responsive to the problem of bike theft in the past. Otherwise, the Chicago Police. And add the police report number to your Bike Registry listing, along with serial number of the bike, if you can.
Already done. Awaiting moderator approval. Sadly I've been through this before. The 'funny' thing is this is the only time I've ever locked it up out front. I bring it up every day. Will update the serial number. Police report is 13-35409.
