The Chainlink

The Chicago Ride of Silence is approaching on May 15.

This year's ride will take a new route, and several ghost bikes need to be installed in advance of the ride.

They are for:

Jackie M- Wabash and Wacker

Ryan B- 18th/Clark

Frederick K- 18th/ Morgan

Yuan Z-24th/Archer

I'm looking for help getting bikes and signs together to install shortly before the ride.

I was thinking of maybe having a workday this and/or next Sunday, May 5 and May 12.

Please let me know if you can help and what your availability is.

Fred's prior bike and sign can be seen here:

Jackie's prior bike and sign can be seen here:

(click the images to make the sign text legible).

Using a message board to organize can be an iffy process, so please help keep it lean and mean by not introducing discussion not directly related to the preparation for May 15, and also by not supporting such discussion with a reaction.

Thanks everyone!

Also mark your calendars for the pre- Ride of Silence Tribute event this upcoming Thursday, May 9 -- with Spiteful Brewing's Ghost Bike Pale Ale... at Heritage Bicycles.

Hey no problem with the bikes, I got several to give to you, but I have no car to transport, I am at 3110 N Damen

Kevin, where are you located?

Meet me at 2931 W 24th Blvd Alley/garage Sunday night (May 5) at 7:30.

Also it is cinco de mayo and we are going on a picnic.

I have two cans of spray paint to donate to the cause, but I cannot work on bikes tonight.  Can I deliver paint to anyone who headed down there tonight?  I'm in Logan Square and I can drop off earlier, just not this evening.

Thx! If youre willing we are going to need help touching up existing bikes so maybe best to hold onto it.

Thanks to Kevin and Ace we got the three bikes made. Now onto signs...

A couple of other needs:

1) We may need someone to sweep (literally) near Clark and 18th before the ride (route not yet finalized)

2) We definitely need someone to go out and touch up existing bikes.

I am taking care of Neill's and can do other ones on the Northside. I asked Elizabeth which ones need it.

Great. Can you coordinate with YAJ above?

Where do I find the list of bike on the Northside that will be visited? I remember seeing one somewhere.

If we have the list, we can divvy up the work. I have may own paint

Existing north side bikes will be Patrick's at Huron and Orleans, Clint's at LaSalle and Oak and Neill's at Wells and Oak.  Jackie's is one of the bikes that h' and crew just finished.  Neill's definitely needs some touch up.  Clint's, too.  It also has a bent front wheel!  I did not look closely at Patrick's, but it probablly did not weather the winter any better than the others.  Thanks!

Patrick Van der Tuin (affiliated with Bicycle Works in St. Louis and credited with being the originator of the ghost bike idea) would place mangled bikes as memorials.... wondering if the bent wheel can be seen as a feature rather than a bug (not finding that easy personally.)

Also-- if the will and capacity is there-- it wouldn't be bad to get some of the other bikes looking better.

I pass Tyler's (Western/Logan) on the bus regularly and it could definitely use a good whitening.

Also Alicia's on Division under the viaduct near Elston.
