My old Trek mountain bike (2000 Trek 7000 ZX) has some surface corrosion (I suppose it isn't actually rust?) on the chainstay.  I would like to get it out.  Anyone have any tips?  Will Steel wool work (I have very fine and very coarse at home), or should I use a solution of some kind?  Thanks.

Steel wool will get steel particles into the aluminum and cause more corrosion.  Use emery cloth or Scotch-brite.

Mother's aluminum polish?

Thanks guys.  I will avoid steel wool.

If it's anodized, none of that stuff will help. No?

Why would it not?

It will rub the anodizing off but still remove the corrosion.

Wad up some aluminum foil and rub it back and forth, to and fro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4dmZrXXN-k

Very cool Gene!  I did take Doug's suggestion and picked up some emery cloth at the orange big box today.  I might try the foil trick as well.  Results to follow!

Foil will only work on chrome not aluminum alloy.  I don't know about emery cloth, good luck.
