The Link Between Kids Who Walk or Bike to School and Concentration

"According to the results of a Danish study released late last year, my Dutch friends are giving their daughter a less tangible but more lasting gift along with that bicycle: the ability to concentrate better. The survey looked at nearly 20,000 Danish kids between the ages of 5 and 19. It found that kids who cycled or walked to school, rather than traveling by car or public transportation, performed measurably better on tasks demanding concentration, such as solving puzzles, and that the effects lasted for up to four hours after they got to school."

I recently bought some shampoo by Alaffia, and on the label they talk about their Bicycles for Education program, of which they donate 10% of their sales to. It says: "Over 90% of school-age girls in rural Togo drop out before finishing secondary school. Since 2006, we have distributed 4,000 bikes in Togo to reverse this trend, with over 95% of bicycle recipients staying in school." Might have just as much to do with shortening the amount of time it takes to get to school as it does with improving concentration, but it's nice to see that.

I may have to look into this shampoo, cool concept... and results.

I know Merz carries it.

This is so interesting, thanks for sharing!

Some of the main benefits of my bike commute are the ability to focus better on my work, I'm less stressed, the endorphin buzz lasts for hours and the day flies by. When I don't ride my bike to work I have a much more difficult time concentrating, I'm more stressed and depressed and the day drags on.

I'm sure this is true of many of us.
