the wind was really light,

as young Deet 4.5 mi set out on his journey.  As he rolled into action, he found himself wondering

I needed to be at work an hour early, so I joined the really early group leaving at about 6:40 a.m.  Took Milwaukee, too, although I usually take side streets to make my ride a little longer.  There is no traffic at that hour!  And Deet is right--there was no wind.  And I saw Michelle Stenzel at Dearborn and Randolph.

Dearborn bridge seemed okay, but I am still being cautious.

I rode today and had a scare on the first leg of my commute when I hit a large patch of ice on the Chain O’ Lakes Bike Path (up near my house in Fox Lake). I was going about maybe about 15 mph and my front wheel started to drift a little bit! I stopped pedaling, and just when I was about to put my legs out to brace for a fall, I was off the patch of ice and rolling on pavement again. Phew!

Part two of my commute was fun, as I watched the movie ‘Iron Sky’ on my laptop on the Metra. (A campy modern b-movie about Nazi’s on the moon trying to attack the Earth in the near future (2018). The US president is a quasi Sarah Palin character who's focus is to get re-elected at any cost. It’s a funny movie which would have been better enjoyed with a few beers.)

When I got to Chicago and unfolded my bike to head off to the office; I saw 7 people on bikes, 4 were on the Dearborn bike lanes… one of them was on a recumbent (I've always wanted to try riding one of those). While stopped at a red light on the Dearborn bike lane facing north, I believe a cyclist facing southbound across the intersection (maybe at Washington or Randolph?) took a picture with his phone. I wonder if he’s on these forums and will post it up? …if so, I’ll be in that pic! Ha!

Also, I think I need some thermal pants to wear under my work pants (which are usually jeans, chinos, khakis or cords). My thighs were incredibly cold today, but my torso was warm with almost too many layers. Loved the busy, sunny ride downtown though... it's such a contrast to the first leg of my commute in the dark from my house to the Metra station at 5:45am in the quiet 'burbs.

I was half on the LFT, half on city streets. On the streets, I saw no bikers whatsoever; on the LFT I was passed by only two people and saw none coming the other way (ie. heading north). I have never seen so few bikes on the road on my commute before.

Jimmy,

Happy you didn't fall!

Yup. That is the Chicago Runners Association water fountain in Lincoln Park ... still running ... pun intended.
