We know that people want safer streets for biking. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration survey found that 71 percent of Americans would like to bike more, but fewer than half feel their community is safe for bikes. There is strong public support for new bike lanes, but controversy tends to be what attracts attention. So I thought it would be nice to reflect on how some press over the past year has displayed the strong level of public support in Chicago through news and opinion pieces from an angle that's positive or sympathetic to biking. Here are just a few examples, with most recent at the top:

This is by no means a comprehensive list and doesn't include any of the many positive pieces from places like Gapers Block, Chicago Magazine or Huffington Post.

What positive news and commentary have you seen lately that put Chicago's public support for biking on display? Post your favorite links below to share!

Hey Lee, thanks for listing this. What do you think about making a "living list" that continuously documents the "displays of public support for biking in the media" that could be sorted by outlet and date, and have a form (maybe through Google Docs Spreadsheets) through which visitors can submit articles they've seen?

Steven -- Great idea. I was going to post this on activetrans.org where I could keep it updated, but a spreadsheet and form with other people sharing links would be helpful. I just set one up.

View the raw listing here.

And submit links to add the list with the form here.

Lee, I forgot that you know Fusion Tables. That's better than spreadsheet because it can be easily turned into a nice website, like this one that I set up for Fatality Tracker. It uses a JavaScript library called DataTables and pulls in the data from a Fusion Table.
