Any ideas on the best way to get to Buckingham Fountain from Union Station?

I am planning on meeting my cousin at the Fountain one of these Saturdays for a LFP ride and have heard that there is alot of construction going on around Union Station. I live on the Chain of Lakes and don't ride don't ride in Chicago much.

Suggestions?

Ideas?

Warnings?

Thanks in advance.

Ride east on Jackson (one way east). Hang a right at Columbus. Just short of Congress, you'll see a giant fountain on your left. Total mileage, less than a mile and a half. http://www.mapquest.com/#c445ef56cb84f163489ba68c

Without Wacker Dr. construction, Kevin's route would be the most direct.  Unfortunately, Jackson and Van Buren are both closed between Union Station and Franklin.  If you detour north to Monroe, use that to go east to the southbound street of your choice.  (I like Clark or Wabash - but if riding under the El freaks you out, don't take Wabash.)  Take the street of your choice to Jackson, then continue with Kevin's route.

Thanks Anne, that was just the construction info I was looking for. A friend of mine commutes on Metra and had told me there was construction, but didn't know exactly what was closed.

Have you gone yet?  I commute along the lake but would like to hear the experience of a visitor.

Planning on going Sept 8 or 9.

Not directly related to the question, but I enjoy using lower Wacker Drive's service lane to go around the loop and surface traffic.  I jump on (now that there's construction) just west of Wells at Lake.  I live at a Lakefront condo, so I'm biased, but several friends have commented on the ease of getting from the Wells/Lake area to the lakefront.
