Does anyone here on the 'link own a bike that was converted using the Xtracycle FreeRadical? I've got an ancient '92 Specialized Stumpjumper Pro that I'll be converting over to a cargo bike later this year using a FreeRadical. However, I have a really limited budget and can't afford to outfit it as thoroughly as I'd like. I really want one of their Trucker kits:

Unfortunately, the total cost on that is way out of my budget though. However, I think I can replicate a lot of the add-ons myself for a miniscule fraction of the cost. Just wondering if anyone has a FreeRadical if they just bought everything outright from Xtracycle or did you use the FreeRadical as the base and crafted your own add-ons?

We have a free radical on a Specialized globe that we love. There are certainly a lot of people out there making their own custom parts. I would check out the Roots Radicals yahoo group, and you can post there to ask the xtracycle community for tips. We use our xtracycle for kid-hauling, and we have both an xtracycle seat and a custom seat, and we prefer the custom one (not surprisingly, I suppose, since we helped design it). We use and love the freeloader panniers. I haven't tried the wide loaders or long loader.
I think you'll be fine building your own accessories. I don't know if more xtracyclers will respond, but I know there are more out there in Chicago, with handier owners than I, that have built more custom stuff. Seems to work great.
I don't think so. They really emphasize that they're creating an open source platform to encourage experimentation. So my guess is that they tried to make it all with standard sizes. But I don't know that. You can take a look at mine, if you want. Or Johnny Sprocket's on Broadway used to have a Surly big Dummy in their display window, which doesn't have a free radical on it, but is fully cross-compatible.
