Hi everyone -

The Marketplace category on forum is the place that anyone can advertise things for sale, but I'd like to make one request: please don't use it as a place to simply re-post your Craigslist ad.

Two reasons:
1) Craigslist ads expire, and so you'll quickly be sending people to a page that doesn't exist anymore.
2) Out of respect for the site, please don't use it simply as a redirect to another site.

Please take a few seconds to post some information about your for-sale items and post a couple of pictures. It's quick and easy to do, and will keep the Marketplace a useful place for everyone.

Thanks!

I generally agree that what you have outlined is good practice, but I wouldn't consider it a major problem that people are posting links to craigslist without backup documentation. I think the attitude of recreating craigslist over here is not embracing the web for what it is; links to content.

Listings expire, threads are buried, and people move on.. no big deal. Craigslist is ultimately the classified-ad tool, while chainlink the watering hole. I think most sellers are typically looking to spend time on the actual craigslist posting, which they will then spread to as many communities as they can, providing it's easy to do (cntrl-v, click submit, finished!).

Setting up too many expectations could hurt the number of people participating. I really appreciate that people come here to post cheap bike gear, and I don't want to see them scared off by extraneous tasks and poor attitudes from 'linkers demanding some sort of web-archival redundancy
h3, you took what i said and made something totally reversed out of it. i say that we should NOT try to make chainlink into a craigslists. craigslist is craigslist. reverse links back here make no sense, it should be the other way, us linking to listing on their servers.

my point is that why force people to have to recreate their efforts here when it's clearly going to go on CL first. they have such high visibility, you are almost doomed if you don't use it or ebay.

chainlink is awesome for bringing people together for trades, as I was recently hooked up with a nice helmet for little cash, and there was no issue when he didn't have pictures in the chainlink thread. he didn't have pictures on CL post either! yet, things still worked out ok.

it seems to me that you just want this stuff posted to the Ning/Chainlink database instead of helping CL.. but why even care that this data is persisted anywhere? the auctions expire and so should the listing - i feel like this is why CL works so well, people can't linger around, forever posting comments on dead auctions.

and who cares whether or not Craig is a saint or a douche, it's free. ebay takes a rake, Craig doesn't. the price combined with the size of the audience is good enough for me to post there.

i'm just thinking about the growth and usefulness of this community, so it is difficult for me to respond when you say 'be part of biulding something great.. ..you up to it?', because I feel like i already am just by honestly voicing my ideas here. sure i want to help chainlink, but i think the worst possible idea is to attempt to set up walls around us. embrace the social web, and let people post whatever the hell they want!
i'm sorry if my arguments are hard to refute, but please don't delete this thread. everyone should be able to contribute to these types of decisions.

why is this board such a fucking oligarchy?
Hey guys - honestly, my post wasn't meant to be a commentary on how to use the internet, what a message board is supposed to be, or a debate between craigslist vs. the chainlink. All I meant was please actually post pictures and a description of what you're selling.

Regarding the Marketplace question, it is a category on the Forum rather than a standalone section of the site. I'll fix the homepage so that there's no further confusion.

I'm going to close this discussion. If you'd like to share more comments about this, please email me directly.

Thanks!
