def like the "test ride" part- with the thief then threatening to call the Police.

I saw this on the morning news and thought it was here in Chicago because of the shirt he was wearing.

Great story! BUT, the piss-poor police response (yet again) was very disheartening. Most bike thieves are serial offenders so it makes sense to invest in an effort to go after them with at least a modicum of tenacity. But no, the cops seem to have had an off-hand attitude that went, "OK, this situation sorted itself out, so no need for further action". It's depressing, very depressing.

Not disagreeing that police often don't take bike theft seriously enough, but there are some details not provided in this story (and some that are) which suggest there's not much the police could do here-- the most glaring being whether the victim had any real proof that the bike was his.
