The Chainlink

Since it's that time of to start planning and budgeting my weekend time for the coming spring, summer and fall,  I'd like to hear of peoples recommendations and experiences with out of the Chicago area (defined as originating 25+ miles out of the city limits) organized rides (preferably 50 miles or more in duration).  My goal is to try to do 1 per month is summer and I'm always looking for new adventures and scenery.

I'll start with my favorite one I did last year -

Door County Century.

Time - weekend after labor day.

Experience - last year out standing weather.  Good routes (24, 50, 70 & 100 mile to choose from), great scenery, great rest stop food (regular stuff + Wisconsin favorites such as cheese curds, pickles, pretzels, beer cheese etc) and a fantastic post ride meal with Fat Tire ale & football on big screen TV's.

I like Dairyland Dare: www.dairylanddare.com 8/11/2012. great crowd, crazy hills, sweetest swag bag, and beer at the end.

Check out the Wisconsin Bicycling Meetup:

These are free, unsupported rides. There are weekend trips as well as one-day rides.

There's always the North Shore Century hosted by the Evanston Bike Club, Sep 23 this year.

A few others I haven"t seen mentioned yet are:

Joliet Bike Club's - 4TH of July ride (Metric Century)  http://www.jolietbicycleclub.org/Invitationals/July%204/jul4info.htm

Bike MS - June 23 / 24  in Dekalb.  As few as 35 miles or up to 200 miles over the weekend - Fundraising required (There's a 12 week training series leading up to this ride where you can get 50+ miles.  No fundraising involved for the training rides) http://bikeild.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=BIKE_...

Zoo De Mack - Boyne Highlands to Mackinaw City  52 miles   May 19

Would anyone be interested in meeting in DeKalb (or better yet, Shabbona) on a nice day and doing this ride?  I could also drive to the Elburn Metra if need be, even provide a bike.  If we met in Shabbona we could skirt around the west side of DeKalb.

On another note, why doesn't Metra go on into DeKalb?

When you arrive, park behind the store – ample parking available. 9am – Ride Starts – All riders leave NCC together and ride to city limit. Ride Continues for 60some miles on this route. ... When you finish, check in behind NCC and let us know you’ve survived. Make your way to Fatty’s, enter the raffle, get yourself a good sandwich and some free Daisy Cutter. 2:30pm – Schwag Raffle – courtesy of QBP, Surly, Salsa, Bontrager and Twin Six. 4pm – Keg dries up, people head home to lick wounds, forget pain, embellish glory, etc. Amen.

I'm going to do the Gravel Metric, and I'd be happy to car pool from chicago. But - I ain't fit enough for real racing.
