The Chainlink

Do we need designated bike 'security' at events like last night's?

Just puttin' it out there.

Low demand and high cost.

Many shops have the smaller NY locks but not the larger ones like that.

A New York lock?  I don't know why every bike shop wouldn't carry at least a few at all times...

My krpyto cable came a week or so ago and I always carry it now.  Thanks for the rec, again.  I use it to lock up my racks.

Thinking of ordering another u-lock soon.  Maybe a mini evo or maybe another new york lock.  Is two u-locks, a cable lock, and pit locks overkill?  LOL

BTW, John, that's pretty cool of you to offer to lock people's bikes up and then go outside to unlock when they want to leave.  Cheers.

You got that right, James.  Got your text, thanks.  I guess it's time to buy/carry a third u-lock.  Can't seem to go to this area without having something of mine or at least hear about something being stolen.
Anyone know where this can be bought locally (not Europe)?  http://www.kryptonitelock.com/Products/ProductDetail.aspx?cid=1000&...

Also, this cable is <$6.  It can only help.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NOO3ZQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_9?i...

Also, why don't more people lock to other bikes?  Some people know I bring 2 Kryp. u-locks and 1-2 Kryp. cables and am happy to throw my cable through wheels/frames.  I've asked and been told "No thanks, I'd like to leave when I want" before.  I don't mind running outside to unlock your bike either.  Just my $.02.

I would have at least followed until I saw where they were going. Maybe to a car around the corner(usual M.O.) and then gotten the license plate number. AND for sure text my fellow riders up stairs(at the same time) to come out. I know several that are salivating to catch a thief.

The OnGuard Brute long shackle  is under $50 with shipping on Amazon.

The OnGuard Brute Regular shackle is just a buck or so less.

Neither is very available locally at LBS's -they usually only carry the pitbull and the bulldog lower-end locks from OnGuard.

Both locks are very heavy 4.9lbs and 5.2lbs respectively.  You save .3 lbs with the shorter shackle but the reach difference is nice sometimes with certain locking situations with that long shackle.

Even with two locks that weigh 10lbs together someone could still cut through both of them in a few minutes so no bike is safe.  With these two locks it is easier to cut the rack or a pole (seconds to unbolt a sign)

But it is 100x better than using a cable or a single lock without even hitting a wheel so a bike can be ridden away after cutting a rack or lifting a pole.

Again, the Bike Registry chain is a third the cost of a Krypto chain. I have one, it's awesome.

I do this:

I have a bolt on front. Unlocked. Not overly concerned.

And with this:

You should at least be able to get the pole side chainstay inside that lock protecting the frame as well.

Good locking for the rear -and the U is busy enough to resist a bottle-jack attack.  It just wouldn't fit into that area without crushing the frame and wheel.

Didn't a bunch of wheels get stolen at a bike event last year?   I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to have people take turns at an evening event where there are lots of bikes locked up.

The event could also be made less viewable to the public, you don't even need to log in to know where alot of unattended bikes will be.

Could it have been this same after-mass event?    I saw a lot of bikes locked in a small area with too few good locking options.  Usually mass tends to break up afterwards and not really become a "destination" ride like this.    Maybe when this happens in the future some sort of ad-hock grass-roots security is a good idea if it isn't possible to get more temporary bike parking.

I saw many juicy targets for theft before I left and had a bad feeling that something was going to go missing.

'Juicy Targets' would be a great band name.

Considering there are bikes everywhere for the taking, I seriously doubt anyone is finding events on chainlink or elsewhere and seeking them out in order to steal bikes.

More likely is that people don't lock as well as they normally would when the bike facilities in a given location are overwhelmed by a large group of cyclists, creating easy opportunity.

More bikes, not locked as well, all in the same area.

What's not to like and seek out?

As far as "locking the website" is concerned the CCM website is not affiliated with CCM.  CCM is leaderless and has no official sponsors or organnizers.  It is spontanius community activism and cohesion.  But there is no one site or person that can be pointed to as representing the "movement" per se and no way to make it "locked" so only bicyclists can view events.

And how would that even be possible or, if so, a good thing?  Anything that makes it harder to view what is going on will only reduce over-all participation.  I'm sure that the Establishment would LOVE that.

The solution is better education about locking bikes and self-security within the community.  We need to either make that happen or accept that we are going to be selected as the juicy targets we are.

I've made a resolution to never go out, even for a short pleasure ride, without two high-end U-locks and always use them both.  I refuse to be a juicy target any longer.

The only thing I use a cable for these days is to lock up my trailer.  U-locks just don't cut it, and the stupid thing comes apart into so many pieces it wouldn't do any good anyhow.

Cables are so easy to cut.
