I'm not a male, but I'm still doing fine with just a gaiter that I pull up just below my mouth.  Hoping to make it through the winter without actually having to cover my nose/mouth.

I cringe when I see dudes without anything covering their face on mornings like this. I don't know how they do it. Manly men they are.

BBBRRRRRR.......Timely tips....

I have a dog walk about 8 blocks away. I'll give it a go and try my two walks that are somewhat close together. I'll return home if it sucks.

One of the residences is in the midst of a clusterf*ck of road work and I just remembered how painful it is to drive around there with all the cul-de-sacs and one way streets. When I'm on my bike, at least I can just go on a direct route and take the sidewalk for 5 minutes. What is troubling for me today is that wind. It's crushing me.

Good ride home.  Temps dropped dramatically throughout the day and I'm glad I prepared for it.

Probably will not ride tomorrow with the snow prediction.  Roads were not nice last week with the during the day snow...

I didn't cover today and boy it was a mistake, eyes watering, cheeks frozen. A very cold ride indeed.

Brrrrrrr, it's officially cold now.

Went about 15 blocks today. Stopped home for the car. Locked my bike. Grabbed my bag off the rack. Walked to the car and dusted it off.

Realized that I was still wearing my helmet.

When I hit my head on the door frame of the car door.

Hi, dork.

Helmets are dangerous.

FROZEN Cassette ?????

I was riding back from the Craftsman show in the loop...I get to Milwaukee and Chicago when my bike screws up.

It's 9pm and 7° out, but I was feeling great...I got this cold thing licked.

But the rear cassette slipped and wouldn't catch. It was spinning free in both directions.

I couldn't believe what was happening, but lucky I didn't buy that over priced beer at the Bar before the show and snaked a free one at the show. I had just enough money with me to but a transit card.

I bought a "one day" CTA pass at the CVS and hopped on the blueline. I was half way on my ride when I noticed the gears were once again catching.

I'll be damned if it wasn't because it was frozen and the train ride warmed it up. I had cleaned my bike only the day before, and I bet there was some water in there.

I took the train to IrvingPark and rode the rest of the way home. It just kills me to spend money on the train.

Has anyone ever experienced this happening?

I have noticed increased problems of my rear cassette not engaging in extreme colds. Not to your severity but it's nerve-racking when it does happen.

Grease and oil get thick and sticky when they get cold.  The extreme temperatures can lead to the pawls that engage and drive the free hub body or freewheel getting stuck.  Bouncing it around can help sometimes.  Indexed shifters can have issues like this as well.  Squirting them full of alcohol or a thin lube can help.

Thanks for the tip...at least i know I'm not going crazy[er].

I actually keep a spray bottle of alcohol  because a mechanic at Rapid transit fixed my "rapid fire" shifter with some.

(when it was stuck and another place told me it was broken)
