The Chainlink

http://chicagobikeswap.org

Summary:

Saturday, March 3, 2012, Pulaski Park Fieldhouse.

Some minor changes:

-More space

-Afterparty at Goose Island instead of alcohol at event

-Benefits Chainlink as well as Bike Winter

Oddly, the site is hard to find by googling "Chicago Cycle Swap" but maybe it will rise in the rankings as more people access it. So remember that the URL is Chicago Bike Swap even though the event is called ChicagoCycleSwap . . .

(edit 1/13-- apparently the event name has been changed-- thread title updated)

Julie and I will be working with Active Trans on volunteer recruitment (watch for a separate thread) , and Bike Winter will be setting up the slate of presentations, so send suggestions my way for what you'd like to see.

Oh yeah-- and Caribou Coffee!!!!!!

same grump I had about the Renegade fair - put the address of the field house on your website.

I've never been to the swap before, and I actually found out about it through a seller on Ebay who said their shop would have a station there.

Are there a lot of good deals?  I'd like to stop by if I'm in need of anything at the time, and if not I'm sure I can think of something.   ;)  Kind of wish it was in the fall though.  Would be nice to have a local place to get expensive winter gear on the cheap.

I did the hard work for you, sten.

Are you sure they were talking about the Chicago Cycle Swap and not the private-enterprise/suburban  Chicago Winter Bike Swap in January?  Always a bit confusing until the latter is over and done with.  This year they're spaced 6 weeks apart rather than 3.

I'm sure they're open to feedback about this-- are you saying it needs to be on the main page?

Their message didn't say anything about winter so I assumed it was the one in March.  But after looking at the list of participants on the winter swap site, I'm pretty sure it's the latter.  Do you know if there's a way to see a list of participating business/vendors for the bike swap in March?  Their presence at either one isn't a deal breaker or anything, just curious who will be there.  I'll likely skip the one in Palatine regardless, just cuz it's in Palatine.

I've been waiting for when this is going to happen as we really enjoyed going to last year's event. Thanks for the heads up on the website & information, Howard.

Thanks, Melanie!

Brendan, the vendor/seller presence at the March swap is very much an open book, as the registration has barely just gone live.  Feel free to lobby your favorite bike retailer to participate :-)  There will definitely be updates as the list grows.

Are they open to feedback about "-Afterparty at Goose Island instead of alcohol at event"? Local beer at the Renegade Craft fair and last year's swap was one of the highlights.

As I understand it that wasn't an easy decision. The cost to have alcohol at the venue was astronomical due to Park District requirements. I can get the details for you if you like.

Personally I thought the opportunity to enjoy a beer was very much appreciated at the proto-Swap at Jack's Tap, but I didn't get a strong sense of how much it added to last year's CSS, especially considering you couldn't leave the serving area with it.

But I think that decision has been made for this year. Goose Island will be providing food at the event, just not brew.

There was a decision made about this early last week I think and I don't think they've had a chance to update the website with the info.

According to my notes, which are only as good as my brain during a phone conversation at the end of a workday, admission will be $10 for non-Active Trans members, $5 for members. No coupon thingy this year. I think there's some wording on the chicagobikeswap.org page to the effect that you can get free entry by signing up for membership.  I could be wrong about any or all of this-- I'd defer to what ends up being posted.

How much will it cost to shop at the swap this year? (The only price I see is for people who want in the door, a one-year membership to Active Trans, and a map for $30.)
