Doug we are sure that is how you remember it happening, but what really happened?

Come to think of it, the times I've experienced ice sheets there have been early in the winter-- good call.

As ice forms on the lake, the wave activity calms down and you get less ice on the LFP from waves washing up on the path. We haven't had enough cold weather yet.

[snip] Is the LFP always like this when it's freezing outside?  [snip]

Low 20s seemed like a little bit of a shock. The cold air stung the area of my face that the balaclava doesn't cover. Also, gloves aren't nearly as warm as I'd like them to be - finger tips were going numb around mile 6. Looks like some heavy duty lobster mitts are in my future.

The ride home was pretty awesome. It's amazing how different 6-7 degrees can feel.

I found some fantastic gloves at Kmart....Wool exterior with 3M Thinsulate lining, warmest gloves I have ever owned

First day my feet were cold. Need to get some nice warm socks. Smart wool, maybe? Maybe I should finally buy some boots or overshoes as well.

Weatherchannel.com almost scared me off the bike today. It said there would be rain with lots of black ice on the roadways.  I decided to at least start out and I'd put my bike on a downtown bus if necessary. Turns out roads (at least the ones I traveled) were in better shape than yesterday. There was a pretty good headwind coming out of the South, so I took my time.

Lake Front Trail was pretty clear of ice (southbound) between Belmont and Oak. Saw a couple good patches on the northbound side of the trail. The hour by hour forecast showed no rain until well after I am home for the right, so I took the chance to ride. Path was empty and everything was calm and beautiful (except for that wind).

I hit a patch of ice at 11th and Michigan (trying to get over the METRA tracks to the LFP). kind of spooked me so I rode up the sidewalk against my better judgement. everyone be careful - when it is dark (7am) now there is more ice and 'near ice'....

My bike didn't slip at all but I put my foot down a bunch of times to verify that I was riding on a sheet of thin ice virtually the entire way to work. The streets weren't salted.

I hope everyone stayed upright today. Days like today are really the worst of winter cycling-- snow and slush is preferable.

I guess I was lucky- it was damp out, but I didn't notice any ice this morning, or maybe I was just lucky getting to work and not seeing much in the terms of ice on Lincoln Avenue. It just looked wet.  The headwind gave me a hard time, but other than that, I had a pleasant commute this morning.

Yesterday was the first day cold enough to make a little ice form on my beard.

Yikes. Maybe it was best that I didn't know about the ice this morning and my inattention saved me? :) Lincoln to Wells seemed clear enough. Everyone please be careful out there!

Black ice everywhere here.  Took a spill not far from home and decided a 15 mile commute would be suicide.

The Parking Lot Coffee Spill Index (PLCSI) was a 3 this morning.
