The Chainlink

I am coming up on 4,000 miles for the season, I should hit it by the end of the the first week of November...Weather willing, (no snow or ice) perhaps WE will find even greater achievement...What have you guys hit, or plan to hit?...Do you even care?...I am not into racking up miles, I just love to ride...

I'm new to this whole "let's bike a lot more" thing, so I was shooting for 1000 miles for my summer/fall season.  That was until I was hit by a car in August.  That sort of put a damper on things and pretty much cut out any riding in September. Still, I'll be pretty close to hitting my goal

As some of you may have noticed from my posts regarding bike theft, I'm kind of a numbers freak. In a former life, I had a computer on each bike, and kept meticulous mileage logs. My highest mileage total was a hair over 7850 in 1991, which also happened to be the year I successfully completed PBP. My commitment to bicycling has kind of ebbed and flowed since then, though I've never been without a bike since childhood.

In December of 2008, I bought a bike specifically for commuting. In 2009, I commuted to work in the Loop from Wicker Park 228 days; in 2010 - 240 days. After last year, I decided I couldn't possibly beat that total, and I really needed to stop keeping track. Today was my 240th day for 2011.

I am within a few miles of last yr.'s total.. 13500, I wil pass it before the year ends. The difference is last year I had a car, this year I did not.

Good Lord! with those numbers, what do you consider "a few miles?"

You oughtta be able to do that standing on your head.

I ride my goal, 52 weeks per year. I often ride all 7 days, but an occaisonal business commitment or close-lake-shore-drive-snowstorm will keep me off my bike. I look at days not miles ridden. Some it's 10 miles, others 30. The important part is to enjoy the ride: take in the sights, smell the aromas, wave some howdies and hit that endorphine high from time to time. If you have your head down, counting cracks, you are missing the best part of riding.

Congrats! When is the one year anniversary?

Dang!  That is impressive.  Do you spend most of your free time on your bike, or use it for work?  I just passed 6300 and am wondering how to find the time to up next year's total significantly.  I guess I need to keep getting out on the cold winter weekends.  My weekly totals will drop to around 70 when the trails get snowed over.

You beat me, soundly, Kevin, in 1991. By about 7hr.
