Roll Beyond Coal - Chicago's International Day of Climate Action

I wanted to make sure all 6000 Chainlinkers knew about Chicago's International Day of Climate Action.

This event is part bike ride, part rally. On Saturday morning, cyclists from all over Chicago will converge on Daley Plaza. They will leave Daley Plaza at 11 a.m. to caravan to Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood and meet up with rally goers near the Fisk Coal-Fired Power Plant. Near Fisk, we will rally at 12:30 p.m. and then march/ride to call for an end to the toxic pollution from the Fisk and Crawford coal plants and current plans for dirty energy projects (Such as the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline) and demand a swift transition to clean energy and jobs.

Moving Planet is a worldwide rally to demand solutions to the climate crisis. Chicago will be one of thousands of cities in hundreds countries participating!

As cyclists we are already doing our part for the environment, but our impact is summarily  negated by coal plants and other dirty energy. If we hope to mitigate climate change, protect the air (we love to be outside in) and the health of our city we must take a stand.  I hope to see all 6000 of you on Saturday!

I'll be there!  I heard that there will be organized rides to Daley plaza. I'd love to join one. Any rides starting in the Northwest such as Irving Park or Logan Square?
We are working on making signs and having streamers at Daley so folks can dress up their bike.  People should wear green and feel free to decorate their bike with clean energy/stop climate change messages!
I know of three organized rides (from Loyola, Rogers Park, Sierra Club) to Daley Plaza to meet up with bike caravan.   Anyone can organize a ride from their part of town to Daley to meet up with everyone.

Yes, so far there are at least 3 organized "pre-rides" starting points where riders will be meeting up to pedal to Daley Plaza.  These rides will be starting here:

  • from the Heartland Cafe in Rogers Park at 9:30 a.m.
  • from the Cudahy Library on the Loyola campus at 9:45 a.m.
  • from the circular rest area at Foster Beach and the lakefront path around 9:45 a.m.

If anyone would like to suggest another starting point to meetup with others, feel free to post it here and also perhaps on the 350.org website, as I've done for the one for Rogers Park: http://www.moving-planet.org/events/us/chicago/2111

Thanks for the question Alberto!  I don't know of any ride yet to Daley Plaza starting from those neighborhoods.  Would you like to suggest a starting point in one of those neighborhoods and we can start advertising it?

Thanks for the detailed answer Cliff! None of those rides would work for me.

Is there any interest in starting a ride from Logan Square, maybe from Palmer Square near the statue?  If people show some some interest we could start advertising it.  I will be riding by Palmer square anyway and I think there are other people on Chainlink from that area.

Yes, I think starting from Palmer Square would appeal to alot of people. We at least need one person to be sure and be there on time and know the route - a "leader".  Would you be willing to lead a ride from that point to Daley Plaza?  Do you have an idea of the best route to Daley Plaza?  And have an idea of the amount of time it takes to get to Daley Plaza from there so we can advertise a start time?  Thanks,

Cliff

I'm not sure I have the skills to be a ride "leader."  I've only been on a couple of group rides so far.  As far as a route goes, I was thinking just head southeast down Milwaukee, south on Halsted  and east on Washington...would that work for a group ride or do you need to take more side streets? I think someone with experience should probably lead.  According to google maps that route would take between 30 and 45 minutes.

Has anyone from Logan Square expressed interest in a pre-ride so far?  Please speak up folks so we can start to plan.  Thanks!

I'd be interested in joining the pre-ride from Logan Square.
i'll be at the heartland cafe a little before 9:30am. it's going to be a beautiful ride.. weather notwithstanding.

Fisk just started wafting through the window here at work in the last 10 minutes or so.

Not sure if they completely take it out of service some days but yesterday the air around here smelled great.  Guessing they took it off line for rare maintenance.

Yeah, Alberto, I think your ride route and time looks to be right on!  It's best to take those streets since those are the most bike-friendly.  So, a group leaving from Palmer Square in Logan Square at 10:00 a.m. is on.  Let's see if we can gather more people there.  There doesn't need to be a "leader" per se, as long as at least one person knows their way,
