OT- How to convert a record (vinyl) to mp3 or wav?

There's something called "Ion Audio Iptusb Portable Turntable With USB" that's available for about a Benjamin. I've never used it.

There's also a (free) program called "Audacity" which is good for making MP3s. The recording process can be a little laborious, but at the end of the day, it's still a record listening session.

I've seen those record players at Costco. I've heard they're pretty good and they come with the software to record your vinyl as it plays directly into your computer.
Other than that you're gonna need the record player and some kind of a mixer that can be hooked up to the computer in order to make it happen.
Either way like Joe TV said it's still a record listening session.
Make a party out of it!

I believe that recording a Vinyl Record to any eletronic devise is like making a Steel Bike, Aluminim.
Recording a Vinyl Record to a CD is ok becuase CD's are the New Vinyl.

I have the ION turntable and it works pretty well, you do have to download the Audacity software, but that's not a problem. It can be time intensive to transfer, but most of the time I just use it to listen to records at my computer. There is a version that has a jack that you can hook up another device like a tape deck and transfer those too.

If your dad still has a regular old turntable and a receiver with a phono preamp, I've had success running the tape monitor out of a receiver into the mic input on a laptop computer. All you need is a RCA to 1/8 stereo patch cord and recording software (Audacity should work for this). If your dad recorded LPs onto cassette tapes, this is pretty much the same idea.

I have also used the ION USB turntable. It works fine. If you listen really closely, it has a bit of rumble and whine to it, but the Audacity software has a really nifty noise reduction effect that wipes it out. This is a good solution when you don't have a phono preamp.

Equally funny is that I'm a dad and my kid wants to listen to LPs. He had his friends over to listen to Physical Graffiti on vinyl. I hear it was so cool. :)
