You might be surprised by what the "good guys" have stashed away in Chicago.

Let me just say that if stuff starts going down in Chicago, come to my house.  We have enough guns and ammo to protect ourselves for at least 2 weeks, no matter who is trying to come in.

I'm a guy, and not that small, but I've been looking into Pepper spray myself. The only laws in this state and city is a city law prohibiting it's use in bars and other public buildings. I think it's from some incident where some bouncers sprayed pepper spray at a club and people were trampled (details escape me right now).

If you google "The Complete Pepper Spray Buyer's Guide (Part 1)" ...(part 2) ...(part3) you get a good rundown on your options. There are a lot of options out there. Biking is obviously done outside, so you want a gel or foam which sprays farther and is less likely to blow back (you do not want a fogger type). There are no restrictions on % of pepper or whether there is tear gas and UV dye as well (3 in 1). Then there are all types of sizes and shapes. They even have bike mounted options.

All I could find about Oakstreet and North ave beaches 2011, was the Memorial day incident.

I think you're selectively remembering things.  It wasn't too long ago that there were headlines about flash mobs and heavy police presence on the LFP by oak street and north ave beaches.  It was the same deal last year as well.

However, if you're talking about dangers on the LFP, the biggest danger by far is crashing due to a negligent cyclist, runner, pedestrian, roller-blader etc.  and not getting robbed.

When ever I see these head lines about the LFP ...I first look to see what time of day it happens, then the area. It is always 9pm on the south side. This sucks for commuters that use the path as a way to get home at night...but I would either ride with someone or find another route.
The definitive chainlink thread regarding pepper spray, and everything I know about the defensive use of pepper spray are courtesy of T.C. O'Rourke. I just might read both chapters again...

Yes, I had read those three threads, and just read them again. Great story. Unfortunately the only pepper spray advice in there is T.C. likes this one http://www.defensedevices.com/bearpepspray.html without a lot of explanation as to why. That thing is too huge for me. It's 8.75" x 2".

There were some threads here last year and I remember hearing about people getting jumped further north by Lawrence or thereabouts.

Poor Jessica, can't get anyone to take the bait.

I'll admit to having not one, but TWO NRA stickers on my car.  All the cars on the street have been broken into but mine.  (And I wouldn't even shoot someone for doing it!  Property is just property, I'm only out to protect myself.  Can't say I wouldn't step outside and confront the thief while armed though.)

My mom plastered NRA stickers on her Prius as well, haha.

Well, don't let this get beyond you and me, 'Oward, but personally me and me droogs Petey and Dim, see, we target cars with NRA stickers on 'em. Hunt 'em down in the night, we do, and likes do a bit of the old in and out on their gas tanks and all, and then maybe a might bit of the ultra-violence on their brake cables and then it don't matter none just how many freaking guns they 'ave when they cannit bring the vee-hicle to stop.

I've been riding LfP from 71st -31st as a commute since may, mostly on off hours and have found i pretty lovely.  that said, the stretch rom 31st- 47th is *as previously mentioned* scary due to utter darkness.   Also, I'd suggest avoiding the bridge on 47th, as that is a place I've known people to get mugged.  I always go around... see you on the path!
