"With all the stolen bike posts lately (and no one thinking "I wonder if there's something under Useful Links for this."), I think it's well past time to make a sticky about the Stolen Bike Registry"

Well said Ryan.

FYI the twitter feed only pulls in stolenbicycleregistry.com, not the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry.

Neither really relate to the question about the National Bike Registry.

I believe I signed up for it when I bought a bike around '93, and there are remnants of the sticker still on the frame. I have heard various random negatives in the meantime, including that they claim collaboration with law enforcement but have absolutely no relationship with the Chicago Police Dept. But I don't recall enough specific info that I would make any strong statements one way or the other.

Can you say more about your specific interest i.e. what you hope to get out of using their services?

I signed up for the National Bike Registry around four years ago after purchasing one of my bicycles (a Surly, so not exactly rare but not super common).  About a year ago, they called me to ask if my bike had been stolen recently.

Apparently, a bike that was the same make, model, size and year had recently been recovered in the Chicagoland area.  They were checking to see if it was mine.  They did not say how the bike was recovered or how they found out about it.  I was a bit confussed because they take your serial number as part of the reg. process, which obviously would not have matched the serial number on the recovered bike (assuming that whomever had recovered it had released that info to them).  I was happy they at least took the time to check with me, though.  Take my story for what it's worth, I guess.  I admit I haven't used the service to register any of my other bikes.

hey im on to a guy on craigslist from Rogerspark

he is selling bikes from 50-70 bucks on craigslist

wondering how to handle it

i have his home address , phone and email...

but he is super flakey and gets sketched out easily

anyone with info on what to do with this information should email me

bterry371@gmail.com

just dont want this guy to continue stealing bikes and selling them

Blake, i would tell you to find out what Police District the address u have for this guy falls in and contact the tactical unit of that district directly with as much info as possible. And key notes like bike A, that he is selling for $50 bux is worth $500 bux. and bike b etc.... Dollar value is important because if the guy is just sellin magna's the bust won't peak interest. Hope that helps.
It's the 24th District for Rogers Park.

But don't use the e-mail option. There is basically one guy goin through all the e-mail they get and it takes for ever. You wanna go straight to the Tactical guys. ;-)

Hi, and thanks for your opinions

Hi all,

First time poster, I generally only post on Chifg.com

I went down to the Swap-o-rama today looking for stolen bikes, and I sure found some.

I made a list and took pictures (this zoom lens has finally found a use).

A hispanic man out of a Ford 350 Econoline blue van with Wisconsin plates has:

Lemond Etape

Mercier Aero TT

Lastly, he had this Schwinn hybrid

I also saw this Specialized MTB hybrid thing

Another van (yellow, "ALARM REMOTE START" on the left side,) had lots of bikes:

Novara Buzz, grey frame, blue rims, fenders, and a sweet neon orange bike with neon yellow tape
Novara Buzz

Kona Smoke, black. Gone by the time I left

Tan/grey Linus with brown saddle and brown Brooks tape, internal geared hub. Stock bars replaced with normal road drops

This is the actual bike:

Using the Chicago Stolen Bike registry I was able to identify and get this Trek Alpha 1.5 (http://chicago.stolenbike.org/node/191667;) returned to its rightful owner today (great feeling):

I was down there because my girlfriend's bike was stolen over the weekend and spotted at the Swap-o-rama on Sunday:

Brown Kona Jake

Brown Kona Jake cyclocross bike, 54cm. Everything on it is stock. Seatpost clamp rack on the back.

Stolen outside of an apartment at Armitage and Damen. U-Lock was cut through.

Reward if found. If found or seen, please call me (630-815-2339) or email me (goldscott@gmail.com).

Spotted at Swap-o-rama on 4100 S Ashland on Sunday Aug 28.

I'll be going back Thursday.

The swap is outside on Tuesdays and Thursdays ($1 admission, just walk in like you own the place and don't pay). On weekends (not sure the days/times) the building is also open and apparently it's $2 admission. I would imagine there's lots more bikes there on weekends.

Again, the Brown Kona Jake I posted above was spotted on Sunday there, but not today (Tuesday Aug 30). Both my girlfriend and I will be out of town this weekend, but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE you and buy you a drink if anyone would go down there and check it out this weekend. Girlfriend is offering a reward for her bike back. Chicago police report and serial number posted here: http://chicago.stolenbike.org/node/191721.

Thanks all!

More info:

I was there this morning (tues, aug 30) from 8-10 or so, then 12-1 or so.

When I came back in the afternoon, there was a SE Draft (or Lager, but I think Draft) with a sparkly greenish frame and blue V (aeroheads or Deep Vs or something shallower) rims.

There were also three hipster looking kids on fixed gears there and I have descriptions of their bikes as well (maybe they're stolen, maybe not). They might've been there looking for stolen bikes as well, for all I know, but they had pretty unique looking bikes:

Black VISP with a white front aerospoke.

White CUTTER with a red rim in front and blue rim in the rear.

Black frame, couldn't get a good grasp on what it was due to no decals, looked like H+Son (or equivalent looking) black rims, Alpha Q fork.
Thanks for the effort Scott, not only for yourself but for the rest of the bike community.
Nice work Scott!
