Who are the Salmon?

Every time I see one, I enjoy examining it carefully and speculating as to how it was spawned.  Here are my totally unscientific guesses based on their physical characteristics:

 

Middle-aged male, semi-functional bicycle: A sub-specie of driver, temporarily denied license by DUI, but not having sufficient physical prowess to walk all the way to the nearest 7-11 for beer and cigarettes;

Hipster on fixie: Not a primarily a salmon, but a separate specie, some of whose members occasionally adopt salmon traits as just one of many ostentatious displays of disregard for conventional behavior;

Young adult with confused/apprehensive expression: A newly minted student who has noted the practicality of cycling for transportation in Chicago.  Probably farm-raised, with little or no previous exposure to cycling.  Perhaps learned behavior from older farm-raised salmon on lonely country roads. This salmon can evolve into a normal cyclist if it survives its first year on the road.

I have recently been encountering a lot of salmon with children along- either on their own little bikes or in trailers. Makes me want to call out, "Don't adopt your parent's bad biking behavior!" and also makes me worry for the kids' safety.

I'm sure the Germans and Burmese ride against the grain as well.

Road rules were written for automobiles and with very little regard for bicyclist's or their safety.

 

I will salmon when it is safer for me  -or is convenient and doesn't put others at risk or cause traffic flow issues.

My spin on "Salmon:"

Unless they're clearly intending to cause consternation or harm to other cyclists, I'm just glad to see that they're riding bikes.

I don't know where you ride in Germany, but I don't recall seeing people riding the wrong way on either the streets or the bikeways in the cities I've ridden in.  Flouting the rules is just not a very Germanic kind of behavior ;-)  Perhaps a Burmese living in Germany would do it...

I always shout,"you're going the wrong way" imitating the scene from planes,trains and automobiles.
