Active Trans always uses Elite Truck Rental and RSL Rentals for cargo vans. They are both local and offer us nonprofit rates/treatment.

We also use I-Go for car-sharing fun (aka every day for Bike to Work Week, etc.)

Not locally owned (wasn't sure if you just needed a place nearby or what), but I've used Budget and U-Haul (and maybe another one) with nearly identical experiences.  The U-Haul at Cermak and Lumber has been surprisingly well-organized and efficient the 3 or 4 times I've been there.

All of the rates are online, so I would just comparison shop the different companies.  Pick one that is convenient to one of the apartments to save money on the pickup and drop off.  You pay by the mile and for the gas (fill yourself or they charge a fortune).  Reserve in advance, because they have a limited number of trucks and will be out of the size you need.  It doesn't matter what size you need, that's the one they are out of.

I've had problems with U-haul in the past, with U-haul you often have to return on the same day or pay extra (its not a 24 hour rental).

Elite is a 24 hour rental that also allows you to drop off to their lot (the security gaurd lets you in) after hours.

I've used U-Haul a bunch of times and never had a problem. However, the 24 hours bit with Elite sounds like a good deal
I think anyone will let you rent for 24 hours or more -- they just charge accordingly.  The general rates listed on the website for 1 day, in-city rentals is for 8 hours I think.  Calling around is probably the easiest way to find out.  Just make sure you get it in writing when you pick up the truck.

The question is a little foggy-- best experience vs. best rate . . .

I used Elite to help my mom move a few years ago.

I can't remember how but somehow ended up with significantly more gas in the tank when I returned it than when I bought it.  They promised to check it out, and they did, and they refunded me about the cost of the extra gas.  Was not expecting that level of service.

I've rented from U-haul and have more often than not been hit with unfair charges that had to be fought.

I'd only use Elite.
