I recently moved the south suburbs, Mokena to be exact. For the last couple weeks I've been looking for the bike organizations and whatnot. I've found Folks on Spokes, and the Joliet Bicycle Club.
One thing I have noticed is that these groups, at least at their meetings, seem to be comprised of older individuals. While nothing wrong with that, it seems to me that new active members haven't joined in a long time.
When riding, I've noticed many younger people out and about on bikes. There seems to be a disconnect. What occurred to me is that there doesn't seem to be a visible online presence for the people down in the south suburbs who are interested in cycling. The Folks on Spokes site is fine, and the Joliet club's site could use some work, but even if both of them were great I don't think it would make a difference.
I believe there needs to be more proactive promotion online of the rides and events going on in the south land. Folks has many rides, and Joliet has rides scheduled every single day of the month. So to help it along I created a Chainlink group for south suburban cyclists.
I think the Chainlink probably has the largest mass of cyclists in the metro area. This will hopefully bring some of us together on the Chainlink and also bring some new people onto the Chainlink. Also possibly help the community itself along.
What other things can we do to build a community?

Active Trans is trying to build community around the region. We have two Southland Coordinators who are working with municipalities, trails, events, etc. in the Southland.
You can connect with our work and hopefully some other folks here: http://www.activetrans.org/in-your-community
Or if you are an Active Trans member (www.activetrans.org/membership) we will email you with action alerts, events, opportunities, etc. specific to your community.
We'll make sure our Southland Coordinators know about the Chainlink group, great idea!
Thanks much,
Ethan Spotts, Active Trans
