Route 66 no longer exists.  It was taken out of the US Highway system on June 26, 1985, a victim of the expressways that supplanted it.  In its heyday, before the Interstates, Route 66 was the main road from Chicago, beginning at Jackson and Columbus, to Santa Monica Pier on the Pacific Coast.

The Stevenson Expressway, I-55, took the place of Route 66's Chicago portion.  I should think if your friend was entering Chicago near Stickney or Summit, the approximate area of the old Route 66, they could ride either Ogden or Archer all the way into Chicago's center.  Ogden intersects Milwaukee just south of Chicago Avenue; Archer goes as far east as State Street.

I get my kicks on this thread.
I know Ogden out in Berwyn is signed as being a former part of Route 66.  So take Ogden into the city and then Jackson.

Paul,

Where abouts on Route 66?

Here are the links to LIB's Route 66 eerr..route.

I've never ridden this, so I can't attest to its accuracy.  I think it would be good to put into MapMyRide and see if it's accurate.

Also, if anyone has ridden parts of it, send Paul some suggestions.

Not sure what you are looking for, but Tank's links are a good start.

Me and my wife did the part from Springfield to Joliet 2 years ago with some friends. The route generally stays away from major roads, but is somewhat boring. Especially the part between Normal and Joliet. That may be because that part of Illinois in general is rather boring.

The maps that Tank links to are pretty much all you need. It also has some of the highlights of the towns you pass along the way.
