The Chainlink

The Ride of Silence is a week from Wednesday and it's a good opportunity to get the bikes looking a little better.

If need be I can take care of all of them but I have a lot on my list right now and would rather not have to.  Ideally someone would step forward and take ownership of getting a bike near them, and far from me, ready for the 18th.

The three that are farthest for me are:

Clint Miceli- 900 block of La Salle

Liza Whitacre- ~3000 N. Damen

Jepson Livingston- Diversey and Avers (~3800 W.)

You would be committing to showing up with at least one full can of white spray paint (or as many as 3 if you go with the cheap stuff), a spray bottle and some towels to clean the sign, and maybe some newspaper and masking tape to cover the sign while you paint the bike, before/by Sunday night the 15th, and reporting back with the status/condition of the bike.

Thanks for contributing.

Hey Howard...I can do one this week. I go past Jepson Livingston's bike nearly every day--that's at Diversey and Avers. And, I even have some white spray paint here.

Would you like a photo of the bike? It's probably just as easy for me to snap a photo or two as to report the condition status.

Holly

I'll gladly adopt Liza Whitacre's ghost bike on 3000 N. Damen.
Thanks, Holly. Good to hear it's still there-- I received a few puzzling calls from the local alderman's office a few weeks ago. To clarify-- by status/condition, I was really only looking for "all spiffed up and ready to go" vs. "sorry didn't get to it."

Thanks!

Got it.

I haven't been over there in over a week because the dogs I usually pick up on that route have been at my house since the 1st. It's possible that the puzzled alderman might have a case for not knowing about Jepson Livingston's bike, but up 'til about 8 days ago, I noticed it there. I'll keep you posted.
Where is the closest place to get some white spray paint? It is my understanding that you cant get spray paint in the city. I'd be happy to touch up a bike or two. One that comes to mind is on Lincoln just north of Irving Park.

I got my contraband rust-o-leum from Evanston. My friend lives there and happened to be coming to Logan for a visit and I asked her to bring it to me.

Can I just tell you how much I loathe that I can't buy spray paint here? I have patio furniture to paint!

My local Ace sells it but you have to ask for it.

My closest Home Depot and Menard's are both in Cicero so I almost forget it's not available in the city.

Last I saw there was nothing left of the bike at Irving and Lincoln but a frame-- someone should remove it if it's still there.

The Rust-oleum is by far the best. I managed to get someone from Rust-oleum to commit a case for the Ghost Bikes about 2 years ago but they disappeared.

The bike at Irving Park and Lincoln is in pretty bad condition- looks like someone stole the handlebars and I think it has been vandalized in other ways as well-I pass it everyday on my commute but never realized what it was until I joined Chainlink. I have some spare handlebars to replace the ones that were stolen if someone wants to fix that one up before the 15th.

I can pass by the Clint Miceli- 900 block of La Salle bike and see what condition it is in. I work only a few blocks from that area.  I'll check it out on my lunch hour today, especially since it is a beautiful day to take a walk. I'll let everyone know what it may need and if possible, I can try to fix it up after work tomorrow or Friday.  Not sure if I can procure spraypaint in time if that is what it needs, but I can try.

I just got back from my lunchtime walk- the Clint Miceli Ghostbike looks to be freshly painted and very well taken care of- there is even a nice flower box with some pretty flowers under it. Whoever took care of it, thank you, it looks wonderful and is a beautiful memorial.

It really saddens me that people won't even leave a memorial bike alone.  I hope karma catches up to whoever stole the handlebars off this bike.
