The Chainlink

Hiya folks,

As those following bike theft may know, one of the primary barriers to getting people's stolen bikes back to them has proven to be lack of proof of ownership, and lack of a recorded serial number.

The Chicago Stolen Bike Registry is exploring a partnership with Bike Revolution, a recent project of Kryptonite, to feature a registration option on our site (thanks to Kevin C for all his work on this to date.)  The primary benefit is a nice certificate that is e-mailed to you in .pdf form immediately with a picture of your bike and all the basic info you provide.

Before we go live with it we'd like to make sure the kinks are worked out; please give it a whirl here:

http://chicago.stolenbike.org/node/190867/

In the first screen you will create an account, and immediately you will be brought to a screen to enter your bike's info. When you press "submit" your certificate will be e-mailed to you.

Please offer up any feedback or reactions or questions here. In the event of technical problems please be sure to provide your OS and browser.

Thanks!

Howard K

The link on the top of the CSBR page that says register with Kryptonite just links to the CSBR main page not to the link provided above.

Actually, it says Register with Bike Revolution.

So glad you caught that.  That menu item should not have been visible-- apparently I accidentally enabled it in the course of my fumbling. It's gone from view now so nobody's gonna know what you were referring to :-)

Were you able to register and list a bike?

One report of a user with Safari 5.04 and Mac OS 10.6.6 having the password drop out each time and not being able to get on with to the bike entry screen. Anyone else with this configuration? Success? Trouble?
Also looking for feedback on building out the instructions on the first page. Want to keep it minimal if possible but if you find anything confusing please speak up!
That doesn't look like a real serial number. Did you enter a serial number, or did the site somehow truncate it?

serial number is missing.  black sheep claims it is there but that the powdercoating may have concealed it.  i took the liberty to etch mine own in the bike using my initials.  no disputing its mine, now.

she is now registered with chicago police and bike revolution.  ill get some pulse tags shortly.

Is my account active if I only registered name info but did not complete a description for my bike(s) ?

If it is you should receive a confirmation e-mail. Although in my own testing it seems that the confirmation e-mail and the bike certificate get sent together after completing the latter. One of the reasons I'm glad others are willing to try it out.

The Pulse Tags are the motivation behind Kryptonite's offering this service. They are not necessary and I forgot to mention to just leave that part blank (as the form indicates) when trying out the form.

I don't mind Bike Revolution promoting the Pulse Tags but I have not really given any thought to their usefulness personally. I know a few folks are trying them out already.

Will let someone else explain what they are.

Besides Iggy I can't tell if anyone has run through the process-- please let me know how it went.
