The Chainlink

Why is there so much negativity in this space?  Am I just totally out of touch with reality, or are the forum rules totally disregarded with unpleasant attacks being the norm?  It seems like no-one can get involved, or ask a question without a gang of trolls jumping in and hijacking the thread.

I feel like I am partially responsible because I haven't been doing this enough but we should all be emailing the moderator more often: report@thechainlink.org

The forum rules are very clearly posted and I feel like there is a group of posters whom should clearly be warned or booted due to their disagreeable style of discourse.

I feel like our community deserves better.

Optional. Otherwise, might inspire a different kinda hate.
Yeah peoplw do hate pantsless peeps for some reason. To me it just says they are ready to have a good time. Way better than a mullet. ;-)

Perhaps it is your approach that is the problem and not people themselves.

Sweeping in as a reverse Don Quixote fighting to build wind turbines everywhere does not inspire others to join you.

Instead working with other asking for ways to make increasing contributions and improvements is better way to get others to agree with you.

I found this community to be quite helpful and friendly.  I have has disagreements and disputes. When I've decided that I simply am not going to make my point online, I ignore a thread by no longer opening it.  Having been on many rides and gone to many events I can tell you that this community has very few if any actual "haters".

DUG hits the nail on the head.  Many people fear and are upset with any idea or philosophy that conflicts with their own.  Someone who merely states or espouses a philosophy or idea that pushes them out of their comfort zone is often labeled a "troll" at first blush and is met with barrage of people who, instead of replying with logic and fair debate on merit, push back with attempts to squash the opposition ideas by appealing to the majority to silence a minority opinion or idea.

Those people here who don't toe the progressive left-leaning eco-political line are often the ones first accused of being "trolls" and "haters."  I suppose people who espouse different political views from the mainstream member of this community have little or no voice in this bicycling forum and are not allowed to express a minority opinion without being labeled trolls or haters and their viewpoints marginalized and assassinated because they are ideological outsiders.

So much for the inclusiveness, tolerance, and open-mindedness to different ideas/viewpoints that many progressives claim to self-identify with.

Because people often view anything that is not in agreement with them to be hate and often feel anything that is not a 'nice' comment is an insult.

As someone who is, in the eyes of many, probably one of the people considered a 'hater' I will say this:

With the exception of one or two people I dislike for personal reasons that have to do with real life I don't hate, or even really dislike, anyone on this forum.  I try to make as many events as I can and almost always enjoy meeting people from here, even the ones I disagree with.

Not to sound like a huge jag but if being called an idiot on the internet or enduring some chidding for your opinion upsets you this much life, in general, must be very difficult.

I will also ad that this, of the many forums I participate in or have used in the past, is one of the nicest out there when it comes to behavior and that the moderators here do a very good job.

some people just suck

Yes.  People can disagree.  People can also take a minute before they post or fifteen after to decide whether their posting fits within the rules of this forum.  Rule # 1 is............

First and most important rule: IF you can’t be polite, don’t say it. We recognize that many topics will be controversial and the nature of a discussion or online posting is that people will bring to it their own opinions, ideas and background. The general idea is that you can disagree with someone without being disagreeable. The rules of debate help the site function better, and will help keep discussions from deteriorating into attacks. Focus your topics on cycling, and your comments on the topic and position, not on the people making them. This means no personal attacks, name calling, hate speech, aspersions about someone’s mother or background, comparisons to notorious dictators… you get the idea. Under no circumstance should a member post anything that might be considered threatening, harassing, bullying, obscene, pornographic, sexist or racist.

This is the number one community rule.  Plain and simple.  Just because you think someone is wrong/naive/liberal you do not have to attack them.  You can dispute their ideas all you want(although it would be better to share your own ideas), but when you attack them and make them feel that sharing their ideas is unwelcome you are being a bully.  Everyone has a right to share their ideas and read threads and contribute... even if they are stupid.

You do not have a right to be a bully.

The trouble with posting about what "people" should do is that the folks you're really wanting to direct it at will think you're really sticking it to "the other guy", and the folks you're not directing it at will think you're talking about them.  I'm not sure I see any net benefit to this thread other than to add a little more drama to the fray.

Yes and they have the right to discuss their feelings here!  It's beautiful!  Thank you for your input.

Why so much hate?

I find it very amusing that the same person who posts a discussion under the incendiary title "Rahm Emanuel Seems like a Jerk" is now bitching about decorum on Chainlink.

I cannot help but finding your postings to be a form of bullying. I guess the rules you advocate don't apply to yourself?

Just sayin'...

I'm directing it at everyone.  I want everyone to think a little bit more about making this a pleasant place for Chicago bicyclists to share their thoughts and ideas.  I'm not sticking it to anyone.  I just want everyone to know that we have a right to stand up to the bullying.  Ignoring it isn't our only choice.  There are rules in place and concerned individuals whom want this discussion board to be more civil.  I feel like making others aware of my feelings (and the rules of the site) is the first step in helping the community self regulate, as others have suggested.

Calling out a public figure on their public behavior as a representative of the public is one thing.  Referring to my posting as "bitching" is another.  I'm sure you could have found a nicer way of saying that.
