Bike Appraisal Options

Hi,

 

I got into a bit of a nasty wreck and was hoping to get some suggestions as to where you would take your bike if it happened to you.

 

It is a bad situation because my frame was a Raseza lugged frame which is no longer made. My first appraisal has suggested that a Gary Fisher Presidio would be a comparable bike today.

 

My biggest fears are that the insurance company is not going to respect the appraisal of a bike that is 30 years old as something that is what it is. I have only got one hit on searching what these frames were worth (750-1500) which was a historical bike website

So if they are going to reimburse me, creating a bike like that today with campy/zeus parts and the raseza/zeus frame would be outrageous. Have you been fought on the worth of your ride?

 

It seems like the insurance company of the driver is gearing up to fight me on this, they have yet to admit liability. The driver was cited as failing to yield and a witness has him on his cell phone at the time of the incident. Went to the hospital for some xrays for a grand total of 1750$ for the pictures and acetaminophen, nothing broken just a lot of soreness that has healed up relatively well.

To clarify, the bike was in impeccable shape and I worked on it at least once a week. Does anyone know if they may try to cut its worth because it is not new and difficult to appraise?

Most bike shops will give you a written appraisal on your bike after (or even before) an accident.  In order to get the best appraisal go to a bike shop that best serves the specific style of bike you have (I.E if you have a 'sweet fixy' go somewhere like Smart Bike Parts or Yojimbo's Garage) because they are going to have the best idea of what it is worth.  Chances are that unless it is an obvious collectable your estimate will be based on purchasing a new bike equivalent to yours in style and quality.

 

When I had my accident the insurance company accepted a bike shop apraisial with no question but mine was a cheap bike.  Any issues there and I would suggest you call any of the very capable bike-centric attorneys in Chicago with Jim Freeman being my personal recomendation.
